FALLEN HERO: San Quentin Corrections Officer Honored By Motorcade

Sgt. Polanco, 55, died from COVID-19 after serving over 34 years at San Qunetin. He is survived by his wife and two children.

The motorcade in his honor on August 26th, 2020 stretched almost two miles long. Several hundred vehicles adorned with American Flags followed Sgt. Gilbert Polanco to his final resting place in a Fremont cemetery.

He was a true Hero, serving overtime and working double shifts as COVID-19 swept through the San Qunetin prison population and Corrections Officers.

“Sgt. Polanco is an example of the best of CDCR and his passing deeply saddens us all. His dedication to public service will not be forgotten,” said Secretary Diaz. “On behalf of a grateful department we extend our prayers of comfort and condolences to the Polanco family during these difficult times.”

Many people fail to realize how important our correctional officers really are. They are faced with the dark brutality of human nature every day, yet continue to serve selflessly.

It is always heart breaking when we lose a Hero. The world will be a little colder without Sgt. Polanco.
