Meet The Idaho Teacher Who Prevented A Mass Shooting At School

Mass shootings have become more prevalent over the last couple of decades. Part of those statistics is school shootings, of course. As of March, 2021 there were 30 school shootings in the year.

Recently, one Idaho teacher prevented one from going from bad to worse.

Middle School Shooting

At 9:15 a.m., students are usually settling into their routines for the school day. Instead of diving into the first lesson of the day, the students at the Rigby Middle School in eastern Idaho were running for safety.

Shots were heard on campus, and all students went to a high school that was close by. It turns out one of the sixth graders brought a handgun to school in her backpack.

According to the Associated Press, she fired shots both inside and outside the school. An eighth-grade math teacher, Krista Gneiting, was able to take the gun from the girl.

Talking the Girl Down

According to Fox News, her father, Dean Turnblom, said Gneiting helped one of the injured students get to a safe spot in the hallway and told him to stay still and quiet.

"And she started walking toward the girl, talking to her very calmly and telling her things would be OK, we just needed to stop and think things through a little bit and just tried to settle her down."

He said, "she put her hand up on the girl's arm and then just let her (hand) slide down her arm until it got to the gun."

As soon as she reached the gun, the girl let it go. Gneiting held onto it and the girl until a police officer arrived with handcuffs.

Multiple Injuries

A custodian, Jim Wilson, was hit in one of his extremities, but the bullet had a clean exit. He went to the hospital for treatment and was subsequently released.

A GoFundMe started for him had raised over $26,500. He is described as a "very loved Rigby Middle School custodian."

Two students were also hit. They will stay in the hospital overnight, and one may even require surgery. Authorities are investigating the shooting to find a motive and where she may have gotten the gun.

Even though Gneiting may have been scared out of her mind at the time, and did not have any formal training, her calm and reassuring manner helped prevent this school shooting from turning out much worse.

  1. So glad for the bravery of the teacher!!!!! She needs to be commanded for keeping her cool!!!

    1. An outwardly calm individual, with nerves of steel and a heart of pure gold; we need more of that in this crazy world of ours.

  2. Another mentally disturbed person who most likely has been noted as being in need of help that either wasn't given, or did no good. Until we deal differently with people who have mental instability, problems like this will continue.
Instead of working on the real problem the answer is always more gun laws. Folks, that won't fix a damn thing. we have a people problem, not a gun problem. Parents are focusing on making money and not on parenting. Time to look at the real issue, and the real problem.

    1. I believe that I the sixth grade a person is twelve. Are you sure you want to label her as mentally ill? A lot more information is needed .

    2. The real problem happened years ago when teachers told students that if their parents spanked them that they could call the police on their parents!! Start disciplining you kids and raise them to respect people this problem would be taken care of!!

  3. Where in the hell did this kid get a GUN? Her parents should be held responsible for what happened bet the gun was NOT kept in a safe or the kid new the combo. Also thank God for the brave teacher who put an end to this almost deadly incedent.

  4. Got to love the so-called news media....6th grade girl shoots kids at school with gun she had hidden in book sack! No one killed, but there is no mention if (anyone) was arrested and charged with a crime (any crime) for allowing her to even get her hands close to a gun! NO, because that would be a pertinent question that any sane person might ask! The dimwit who allowed this child to get her hands on any gun (other than a toy) should be locked away for a while and never allowed to own a gun themselves! Get some judges with a set of gonads and stop coddling these retards!

    1. Your questions should be asked of the media - - they probably had some additional information but wanted you to "return" to their "station" for ratings purposes...the only reason I can come up with that they didn't give the entire story mostly about safety of the "heroes" ---the media has a way of escalating the readers concerns ...their mantra is "get the reader/listener to come back " to our place

    2. If these schools had metal detectors at each entrance thes backpack guns would of never made it into the school. We’re being stupid to not have super security at schools as well as all hospitals. Shame on us

  5. Where are these kids getting guns from? If one has gun at home one needs to have it unavailable to your kids.

    1. cozycalico,
The PARENTS should know enough to INSTRUCT their children. I own handguns and I have a concealed carry permit. When my kids were old enough to understand, I took them to the range and SHOWED them what a bullet will do using plastic bottles filled with water. You cannot HIDE the guns form curious children, and TELL them to "leave them alone". KIDS will be KIDS and they will get "curious" to see for themselves, so if you take the TIME to SHOW them the dangers, and that will always be a positive thing.
MY children NEVER touched ANY of my guns, and today my Son also has several, and a CC permit.
If you feel you cannot take the TIME out of your "busy day" to instruct, or if you you do not TRUST your children, perhaps consider a locking GUN SAFE.

    2. You must have or know of angelic children as many get to a certain age and they know more about how to overcome any security better than the parents. Guns can't simply be locked up as kids know very well how to overcome even coded locks. And probably know or can easily figure out passwords their parents may use. When putting a password on something choose something NOT related or guessed by family or acquaintances- - maybe something like "binder rings" or "businesscard" or another abstract work - even "staples" or "sprayadhesive" or some word purposefully spelled wrong!

  6. If you teach your kids about guns and the consequences of what happens when you shoot someone. I taught my girls at a young age not to play with guns and theynowown there own. People need to take responsibility for their own actions and parents should be held accountable for this child's behavior. The democrats will blame the gun and gun manufacturers because they are idiots. The safety on a gun is useless, the safety is the thing on your shoulders.

  7. 2 Timothy 3rd chapter in the Holy Bible read it people. The reality of all your questions are answered within and beyond forever !!!! A Men " Jesus Christ" is Lord forever.

  8. Guns don’t kill people, people with no knowledge of what a Gun will do are the ones that use Guns to kill, the gun free Country Russia has had a School Shooting Killed 8 students that just shows how stupid or Democrats are Gun Laws do not help anyway, we have more Gun Laws than they know what they are, so why do the Democrats want more.

  9. Thank God for that BRAVE TEACHER. The time has come that our school system must erect a fence around the schoolground for safety (just like that of Congress being protected by a fence). I'm not saying that's a cure all. But at least it is one layer of protection.

    1. A fence, alone, will NOT prevent the entrance of a gun, to a school, or any other building; that necessitates a metal detector gate, or frame and "someone" to monitor whom ever passes through it. A fence is, merely, an inert object to get around, or through.

  10. During an interview with this brave teachers father, he said that she "felt like she had an angel on her shoulder telling her what to do". Clearly she is a woman of faith and listened to the promptings given to her. I salute her for being so brave and putting her own life on the line to save her students.

  11. Maybe instead of honoring teachers for trans gendering your kids or teaching how to hate the country they live in they should be supporting teachers like this one and giving then the awards.

    1. THANK YOU FOR YOUR COMMENT. SAD BUT TRUE, WE NEED TO OUST THE WOKE SCHOOL BOARD AND TEACH OUR KIDS TO LOVE AND RESPECT OUR GREAT COUNTRY.
BESIDES WE HAVE NO ONE ENFORCING OUR LAWS. BIDEN IS FOR ABOLISHING OUR POLICE. WHILE WE THE TAX PAYERS ARE PAYING FOR PRIVATE SECURITY FOR THESE CORRUPT POLITICIANS.

  12. Praise God, that the teacher was able to stop this insanity, without being harmed. Today's children aren't being raised as we where. Most just grow up, no real supervision, discipline or taught responsibility or respect for anyone, anything. Parents are failing to do their jobs, grandparents are failing to be responsible for their child's failures as well, just my opinion.

  13. It is time to put Retired Police Officers with Guns, at Every Entrance to Schools.
All Doors, INCLUDING CLASS ROOM DOORS MUST ALWAYS BE LOCKED.
IT;S TIME TO PUT CRIMINALS IN JAIL FOR THE MAXIMUM SENTENCES.
THESE WOKE/LIBERAL/DEMORATS AND JUDGES ARE RELEASING VIOLET CRIMINALS\, WITH NO BAIL, BACK ON THE STREETS TO CONTINUE INJURYING AND EVEN KILL MORE INNOCENT PEOPLE.
AMERICA SHOULD BRING BACK THE DEATH PENALTY, FOR THOSE WHO KILL POLICE AND INNOCENT PEOPLE.
