Times Square is one of the busiest and well-known areas in New York City. On Mother’s Day, it was packed with people visiting their families from out of town and parents shopping with their children. The day ended more different than anyone could imagine.

Shooting in Times Square

A little before 5 p.m. on Mother’s Day, NYPD investigators say two to four men began arguing at 44th Street and 7th Avenue. During the argument, one of the men grabbed a gun and shot at the other men.

According to WABC, the bullets did not hit his intended targets. Instead, the bullets hit three people who were close by, including a little girl who was out shopping for toys with her parents.

The girl is only 4-years-old. The other two victims were a 23-year-old woman from Rhode Island who was hit in the thigh, and a 43-year old New Jersey woman was hit in the foot.

Rendering Aid

NYPD Officer Alyssa Vogel helped take care of the little girl, Sky Martinez, in the moments after she was shot. Vogel reassured sky’s mom, saying, “I kept telling her to breathe and that her daughter was going to be OK. I kept trying to calm her down because she was obviously very scared.”

“This little girl was so strong. She didn’t even cry once except when we were putting the tourniquet on. She screamed because it’s very painful.”

Vogel picked up the little girl and ran her all the way down to a waiting ambulance. She rode in the ambulance with the little girl.

Once they reached Bellevue Hospital, Vogel’s work was not quite done. Her maternal instinct took over, and she ran Skye into the pediatrics unit and handed her to the doctors there.

According to the New York Post, Skye was shot in the calf and is expected to make a full recovery as are all the shooting victims.

Still Looking

His brother identified the suspect as Farrakhan Muhammad. His brother was the intended target of this shooting. Muhammad has operated illegally as a vendor in the Times Square area and was charged with assault last year. Police officers are still looking for the 31-year-old man.

Officer Vogel stepped up and did what she was trained to do, save lives. She went above and beyond caring for the girl and reassuring her mother.
