Couple On Crime Spree Strike K9 With Car, K9 Gets Revenge

 November 19, 2023

When couples go on a crime spree, it's definitely double trouble. Couple's partnering in crime invoke the image of Bonnie and Clyde and while few live up to the duo, it's not for lack of trying.

Most couple-led-crime sprees are little more than a chaotic mayhem ending with themselves or others getting hurt.

Florida Couple

In Haines City, Florida, a police officer observed a blue 2003 Toyota sitting at a construction site while out patrolling. According to WTSP, it was around 2:00 a.m. and this was a high crime area.

Figuring he had stumbled on something no good, officer William Tucker decided to take a look.

The suspect, Matthew Swett, spotted the officer as he approached. Swett quickly got into his truck along with another individual, Kaila Ellig, and they charged the patrol car. The collision damaged the front of the officer's car and brought both vehicles to a stop.

K-9 officer Joseph Elam and his dog Cash watched Swett take off and gave pursuit. Officer Elam followed the couple for a short time before it crashed into a ditch. The suspects ignored verbal commands to surrender as they tried to get the car running again.

That's when Cash was unleashed and went after them, ready to take them down. Unfortunately, Swett was able to get the car running and again charged towards police.

"The commands were ignored, and Swett put the vehicle in reverse and intentionally drove toward the two, striking Cash. Officer Elam, seeing what was about to happen, used the leash to pull Cash away from the accelerating vehicle into his arms and ran, with Cash in his arms, to avoid being run over. Thanks to his quick action, K-9 Cash was not injured."

Escape Tactics

According to officers, Swett repeatedly backed up and rammed Officer Elam's vehicle with his own before eventually taking off again.

Fortunately, this next jaunt did not last very long before he crashed again. Swett and Ellig jumped out of the vehicle and ran into the woods.

The abandoned vehicle caught fire while Polk County and Osceola County Sheriff's Deputies set up a perimeter and began tracking the two suspects.

The pair ended up climbing over a fence and cutting a hole through a screen to gain entry to the home of Haines City Mayor Morris West.

Under Arrest

Officers arrived at Mayor West's home and confronted the pair again, but Swett refused to follow officers' commands and began reaching into his waistband. Acting quickly, Officer Elam released Cash and the dog went to work.

In the melee that followed, Swett was bitten on the leg and finally decided it was time to give in. According to authorities, Ellig came peacefully after seeing what Cash did to her boyfriend.

Swett is facing a laundry list of charges, including battery on a law enforcement officer and armed burglary. He was treated at the hospital for his wound before going to jail.

Who's a good boy? Cash is a good boy... just like all the other hardworking Police K9 officers we love to see at work.

    1. These things need to make "front page" news to cause others to realize the law enforcement has all of our backing, despite those who would speak otherwise. We pay taxes to support law and order as well as infrastructure and government staff and programs. We've got to keep this law and order, or anarchy and martial law will emerge, and no one will be safe from any direction.

    2. But, I'd hope they got a whole lot more then just a dog bite, and then jail !!! Any dog life worth more than any criminals life !!!

  1. A 100 pound Canine at 30 mph (Which any healthy dog can reach in a few feet) has 4-5 times the muzzle energy of a 40 caliber round. And the canine can change direction. And that is not counting the teeth.
    Good Dog!

  2. Good! He should have been dog bit for playing stupid games and almost getting Officers and their K-9's hurt. I hope it hurts, a lot!

  3. A 100 pound Canine at 30 miles per hour (Which any healthy K9 can reach in a few feet) has 4 -5 times the energy of the officers service weapon.
The K9 can change direction to avoid a miss. And that is not counting the teeth.
    Good Dog!

  4. More kibble for this pooch....and better check him for rabies from this pair of fine upstanding citizens,,,,

  5. Sometimes we get to hear about true justice and obviously this is one of those times!
It's too bad "Cash" didn't leave the b------ with missing leg!! That would really be justice! It would be difficult for the creep to continue on his chosen path of destruction!!

  6. I hope that K9 bit every play it possibly could and the most sensitive areas got it several times over. They deserve it!

  7. Thank the officer for making sure his partner was not hit by the car. Usually dogs are sent in without bullet proof vests like the humans are and they take the brunt of the problem with a bullet. These K-9 would give their lives for their human partners and the human partners SHOULD do anything to save their dog. I feel these dogs are used only to save the humans and are neglected in several ways. This dogs deserves more than just extra kibble. It deserves more love and kindness and a good doggy spa day

    1. These dogs LIVE with the family and the officer. They DO get the love they deserve. The officers think of them as a partner just like they'd think of a human. They live the life of a human officer. Their health depends on the kind and quality of their "kibble" and I'm sure the officer & family take care of it. I don't think the officers send the animal in just to protect themselves but also others. They do NOT send them in to "catch the bullet meant for the human"...they send them in because they are faster than the human, they "strike" faster & often get them down without anyone but the perp getting hurt (with a dog bite only) by a gun. GIVE THE POLICE the credit for working with non human in a special way to save lives...INCLUDING the dog's. Bad guys are bad because they don't care about any form of life!

    2. My AKC Dog Club regularly donates to the benefit of Canine Police Dogs! Varies from bullet proof vests, to training equipment to other needs. AKC reunite has recently introduced a program to match (75%) individual Club contributions towards the purchased of new canine police dogs either replacing retirees or for now "officers" Kudos to the AKC !

    3. Vested Interest in K9s takes donations & provides K9s bullet proof & knife proof vests to departments who request them. I have supplied 7 so far including one to my local Sheriffs Dept and 2 to local Police Dept.. Vests expire every 5 years & must be re[placed just as the human vests do. If a Dept has to purchase, they cost between 3 & 4 thousand dollars ea. A donation of $950 will get a vest through Vested Interest and you can request the K9 & Dept it is to go too if they've made the request.
