Officer Takes Bullet To The Chest, Proceeds To Talk Down Gunman

Body cams are an essential part of police work. They show what happened in many situations, eliminating he said/ she said scenarios.

For one Cleveland officer, the video footage from his body cam proved to be vital.

Officer Assistance

Theodore Johnson's wife, Juliette Johnson, went to the police station to make a report about her husband.

According to the Cleveland Plain Dealer, "Juliette Johnson went to the Fourth District police station that night to report that her husband had been drinking and was waving a gun around, threatening her and their landlady."

Police officers were dispatched to their home and were let into the upstairs apartment by the couple's landlady. The officer's announced themselves as they entered, stating that they were officers.

Confronting Theordore Johnson

However, Theodore Johnson was waiting. He jumped out with his gun and shot Officer Munoz in the chest. Munoz was wearing a bullet proof vest, saving his life.

Munoz took the opportunity to return the favor, attempting to get the 64-year-old to put the weapon down.

Munoz told Johnson, “We don’t want to kill you—drop the gun!”

“You need some help. I know you shot me but we’re not going to shoot you.”

Officer David Munoz

Even though Munoz gave Johnson the opportunity to make the right decision, he instead choose to raise his rifle aiming at the four officers.

The officers were forced to fire, leaving Johnson dead. Clearly the situation turned into a his life or theirs narrative, when they just wanted to help.

Prior Conviction

Johnson had a prior conviction for domestic abuse. The officers entering his home knew that that it was a high risk situation.

However, they went in anyways. They went it to do their jobs. They went in to try to save a life.

Unfortunately there is nothing you can do when people do not actually want to be helped. You can offer as much as you want, but there is no guarantee they will take you up on the offer.

To the Officer Munoz's credit, he could have fired back immediately after Johnson shot him in the chest. Instead, he tried compassion and reason. He even offered help, help that Johnson did not want.

  1. That social BullShit gets cops killed! I would not work with that officer if my life depended on it. He needs to find a new line of work..if he stays as a police officer,he will get some other officers killed!
You don't put that uniform on to dishonor fallen men& women who have given their lives to save both civilian and sworn officers.
" Lead,Follow,or Get out of the Way!

    1. Not sure why you would make that comment? The officers gave the guy a chance to save himself and he raised his gun. At which time the brave officer shot and killed him -- right thing to do. I didn't see a single thing that looked like "social BullShit."

      1. remember the left pushing for social workers to handle a sistutition like this.tell me how that would of worked out.

    2. What in the world are yu talking about .. I wish all policemen were as brave & compassionate as he was ..

    3. This is truly not the time to call a social worker in to resolve this situation!! I'd he would shot a fellow officer, he would of shot his wife children and yes you too!!! The officer is required to protect and serve and he attempted to offer help. After being shot himself!! Think about this!! You would be dead right now if your were busy calling a social worker!! Or your family would be in harms way, perhaps living across the wallway in the same building. Very sad situation for alll!!

  2. God bless the good guys. I'm very happy it was the criminal that died, and not one of our brave officers!

  3. Clearly this man wanted "suicide by police," .. the brave & compassionate police officer who was shot gave him a chance 2 live by stating, " I know yu shot me but I'm not gonna shoot yu man .. I want 2 get yu sum help" .. the man chose death by raising his arm & pointing his gun at the police.. who had no choice but 2 shoot him ..or get shot..

  4. Most officers are decent, compassionate people who are in this dangerous line of work to help us. Yes, some are power - minded, but all want to go home at the end of their shifts. Thank you to the police officers!

  5. This man was given the chance to live by a compassionate Officer who was shot as he entered the suspects home. He could have legally and rightfully returned fire killing the suspect immediately but because the suspect was holding his firearm down at his side he chose to try and talk to him. It did no good and the Officers had to eventually shoot and kill him anyway when he presented a deadly threat by bringing up his weapons again and presenting deadly force against the Officers giving them no choice but to open fire. Of course I can predict that BLM or other activists will want the Officers charged with murder and claim these White Officers went out there to kill another Black man.
