While the U.S. troops may have left Afghanistan, they are still facing attacks in the region. In Syria, the soldiers based at the Al Tanf Garrison were attacked.

Troops Attacked

According to Navy Capt. Bill Urban it was a "deliberate and coordinated attack." In his statement, Urban said, "Based on initial reports, the attack utilized both unmanned aerial systems and indirect fire."

Thankfully no American troops were injured in the attack.

“We continue to maintain all appropriate force protection measures to ensure the safety and security of our forces. We maintain the inherent right of self-defense and will respond at a time and place of our choosing.”

Remaining Middle East Forces

The United States has troops stationed in the Middle East. In Syria, there are 900 troops and 2,500 in Iraq. The troops in those two countries have been in the area for quite some time, even though the current administration makes it seem like the United States does not have anyone over there at all.

Biden told the United Nations that America was now in a time of peace. He announced to the United Nations General Assembly, "I stand here today, for the first time in 20 years, with the United States not at war. We've turned the page."

Democrats have jumped on board with the train of thought. Sen. Tim Kaine (D- Va.) has said many times that he is so relieved that kids are not going to be born into a nation at war. Kaine said in a Senate hearing, "Some will challenge my characterization because the world is a dangerous place and American troops are deployed all over the world."

Still In War Zones

In Iraq and Syria, the United States still faces threats from groups backed by the Iranian government like Kata'ib Hezbollah and Kata'ib Sayyid al-Shuhada. The U.S. executed airstrikes on both militias in June and was attacked multiple times by rockets and drones.

On July 7th, two service members were injured in an attack on the Al-Asad Air Base. On top of that, the United States is still fighting against terrorists like Al Qaeda and ISIS.

As long as the United States is still fighting against the terrorist organizations behind the 20-year war, we are still technically at war. So claiming that the Forever Wars are over is a bit of an overstatement.
