A Huntington Beach Police helicopter crashed in Newport Beach on Saturday evening, killing the pilot and seriously injuring the co-pilot.
The department has grounded all other helicopters for the moment:
“We need to have the current aircraft inspected to make sure there’s nothing wrong…we’re going to pull those in — they won’t fly until we do the inspection,”

These line of duty deaths are incredibly tragic, especially when they are preventable. Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of the Officers and the department.
It is with tremendous sorrow that we announce the passing of Officer Nicholas Vella, a 14-year veteran of HBPD. Officer Vella died this evening after our police helicopter, HB-1, crashed into the waters off Newport while responding to a call for service. (1 of 3) pic.twitter.com/mxulAf248Q
