In an incredible demonstration of courage and fortitude under fire, a North Carolina Sheriff's deputy took out his assailant after taking 5 bullet wounds.
Deputy Whyms was flagged down by a concerned father, who then requested assistance with his unstable son. Whyms jumped right in to help and conducted a traffic stop on the suspected individual.
As Deputy Whyms approached the vehicle, the driver opened fire without warning. Despite taking 3 bullets to the upper body and 2 to the lower extremities, Deputy Whyms immediately returned fire.
The gunman, identified as Aidan Bryant, sought medical care shortly after fleeing the scene. Bryant was hospitalized and will be arrested as soon as he is released from medical care. It is still not clear if Bryant is the unstable son whom Deputy Whyms was trying to assist.
As for Whyms himself, he is expected to make a full recovery. This is incredibly good news and our prayers remain with him through his recovery.
What if the anti-Police activists had their way and this was a social worker, not a Police officer handling the call. Would they have been better off? While we think that replacing Police with Social Workers is a terrible idea, let us know what you think in the comments below.

If the perp was black and the officer white, the demoncraps (see defund-the police) would push prosecution of the officer's actions for practicing 100% rehabilitation of the criminal element. Perp's family should be fined for not getting help for the perp before this unfortunate event. BTW, will these head-shrinkers/Social-Services personnel be armed?

If hes 18 or older he can refuse any and all help, you can commit someone but even they cannot force medication counseling etc on that person. You would need a judge to sign a court order to force medications on that person and that doesnt always happen. Can't always blame the parents.

LOL, it is a FN joke to think someone who is about to commit a crime of harmful behaver can be reasoned with by talking to a social worker. And my bet is it would soon reduce the number of social workers. Courts, family and associates have to intervene BEFORE es postal, not as something is going down, very few who have gone over the edge can be reasoned with. Someone " I think the saying of an ounce of prevention is worth more than a pound of cure...... an, of course confinement has a use.
What does work is specialized police training in dealing with mentally disabled subjects without the necessity of killing them. There are techniques which can be utilized effectively by such trained police officers which increases both officer safety and the safety of the mentally I’ll subject. This type of crisis intervention requires a lengthy period of training as is best confined to a special squad of responding officers.
If we re-opened some of the mental health hospitals where these people could be cared for that might help. Go walk our streets and see how many mentally ill we have walking around unsupervised!! I've seen too many of these poor lost souls.
Originally the left wing loons sued to release the mentally ill "because they have a right to life just like anyone else." Past California Edmund Bown started the closures of mental hospitals where the crazies should have remained. Jails now house many of the crazies because mentally ill people often don't know what they're doing. Did those left wing bleeding hearts factor this into their decision to close the mental institutions?
So you have a simple traffic stop and someone opens fire and shoots you five (5) times and the officer is lying on the ground, so is he/she supposed to call a social worker or waits for the individual to shoot him/her a couple more times before returning fire?

Do you really believe that cops should be converted into social workers? That's what you're asking for. How would that have worked in this situation? It wouldnt.
Send in the social workers. If they're crazy enough to respond to dangerous calls, there will be an attrition rate which will cause a shortage of social workers. The problem will take care of itself.

Never send a social worker to a gun fight. The police need to practice on kill shots with only one maybe two to put down gun threatening criminals. Don't riddle them that's what gets the police in trouble.
