A former U.S. Marine and Corrections Officer has been killed while serving as a contractor in Ukraine. The death of 22-year-old Willy Joseph Cancel marks the first known death of a U.S. citizen in the Russian invasion.
Willy Joseph Cancel leaves behind a wife and 7-month old baby. The White House has yet to respond, choosing instead to punt the issue and discourage Americans from participating in the Russia/Ukraine conflict.
Willy’s mother explained why she believed he went to Ukraine in the first place:
“He wanted to go over because he believed in what Ukraine was fighting for, and he wanted to be a part of it to contain it there so it didn’t come here, and that maybe our American soldiers wouldn’t have to be involved in it,”

Most won’t understand the mindset behind what Willy Joseph Cancel did, but he is a hero and a patriot. It’s incredibly tragic that his baby will have to grow up without him as a father. Hopefully the community rises to support the Cancel family.
