In the wake of a growing threat from al-Qaeda affiliate al-Shabaab, Biden is reversing Trumps withdrawal of troops from Somalia. This small, persistent presence may be one of the first strong foreign policy moves by the Biden administration since he took office.
According to top Military leaders, this force will ease safety concerns for troops deployed in and around Somalia. The main goal of the limited Military presence will be to "train, advise, and assist Somali partner forces to disrupt, degrade, and monitor al-Shabaab".
"Our forces are not now, or will they be directly engaged in combat operations,... The purpose is to enable a more effective fight against al-Shabaab by local forces."

The last 16 months of episodic U.S. Military presence in the region has been largely ineffective and unsustainable. Critical intel is lost in the constant transition, where a persistent presence would be able to maintain better continuity.
The U.S. Military presence in Somalia will be limited to 500 troops working alongside and supporting both local and international forces.
Ironically, the Biden Administration used the same authorization for use of Military force passed by Congress after the terrorist attacks on 9/11. Hopefully this will go better than the Biden debacle in Afghanistan in August of last year.
Only time will tell, but hopefully this is a good move that enhances the safety of the men and women serving in the Somalia region.

Any examples to back up your conclusions? Eisenhower sent non combatant "advisers" to South Viet nam. We followed that up when Kennedy sent American fighting troops. Johnson really screwed the pooch by increasing the numbers of American troops massively. One example that might support your statement would be W's going all out against Irac because our so called "military intelligence" (oxymoron) claimed Hussain still had weapons of mass destruction. We trained the Irac forces for 10 years only to have them throw down their weapons and run leaving millions of dollars of military equipment to the enemy! Apparently we taught them to sit up, roll over and play dead because they sure weren't trained to fight. One thing they could do was shoot their American training officers in the back and flee. One example of a "war" that a republican president can take full credit for would be Grenada. Reagan sent American forces to stop Cuba's attempt to take over the island. It seems to have been cleaned up in less than a week in spite of our various services involved not having common radio frequencys.
