New Yorkers are crediting an off-duty corrections officer with preventing a mass shooting on Sunday night. As usual, bad guys with guns were stopped by a good guy with a gun. Fortunately, in this case, the good guy was on scene and responded quickly enough to avert a horrifying tragedy.
New York City Department of Corrections Officer David Donegan had joined a group of people in observing a remembrance of a friend when two men drew weapons and began firing into the crowd.
Acting quickly, Officer Donegan drew his gun and shot several rounds at the gunmen. During the shootout, Officer Donegan was shot in the leg but he managed to shoot one of the suspects in the torso, effectively ending the threat.
Officer Donegan’s quick thinking and incredible bravery is credited with preventing a tragedy. While he is currently being treated for his injuries, he is expected to make a full recovery.
New Yorkers have taken to social media to express their gratitude for Officer Donegan’s heroism. One Twitter user said, “Thank you Officer Donegan for your bravery! You are a true hero!”
“Thankfully, Officer Donegan, who was off duty at the time, immediately pulled out his weapon and engaged them, firing several shots,”
