About 10 p.m. on November 10th the New York Police Department (NYPD) was alerted to gunfire by multiple 911 calls, a shot spotter notification, and two people flagging down a patrol sergeant.

Domestic Dispute

The suspect, 42-year-old Jermaine Hickson, instigated the incident by threatening to shoot his girlfriend outside of a grocery store.

The couple was spotted arguing in a crosswalk and Hickson openly held a firearm by his side.

When officers arrived on scene, Hickson immediately opened fire on them.

"The male immediately starts shooting at the officers,... The officers respond by immediately firing their weapons."

Wild Gunfight

Chaos ensued as officers exchanged gunfire with Hickson. Employees of the grocery store and bystanders alike tried to hide or took off running. Hickson attempted to find cover behind a parked car, continuing to fire as he backed away from the police.

Responding officers managed to find cover using their patrol vehicles and returned effective fire.

Hickson was struck multiple times before ducking behind a car, but he stayed in the fight long enough to exchange more round with police.

The suspect finally went down, but as police approached he rolled over and managed to fire another round. Officers managed to disarm him and immediately rendered aid.

However, Hickson did not survive his wounds and was pronounced dead at the scene. Several officers were treated for minor injuries but were otherwise unscathed.

It's crazy how quickly domestic incidents can go from a simple argument to all out gunfight.
