On August 15, 2012, Lieutenant Murphy and Officer Lenda responded to a shooting at a Wisconsin Sikh Temple. The officer's brave actions that day earned them both Medals of Valor.
Temple Attack
Lieutenant Murphy was the first to respond to the multiple calls from the Temple. Once there, he was able to see the suspect coming out of the building and two hurt victims.
However, before he could fire at the suspect, he was shot in the throat, legs, and hand. Officer Lenda arrived shortly after.
He was able to draw his weapon and hit the suspect, who was then partially disabled. The man crawled out of view of the officers.
A single shot rang out, and the suspect had shot himself. Officer Lenda drove to where the shot was fired and confirmed that the suspect was dead.
Helping Others
When additional officers arrived, Officer Lenda sent them to help Lieutenant Murphy. However, Murphy sent them to assist the people inside the Temple, despite being injured himself.
They later discovered that the man had fired about six rounds into the pantry where women and children were hiding. When Murphy got to the scene, the suspect fled.
From the first call to the time that Officer Lenda shot him, the whole incident was six minutes or so. But the bravery and quick thinking of the two officers brought a quick conclusion to the attack and possibly saved many lives.
