 April 3, 2023

On March 29th, 2023, around 10:30 a.m., a man in his 70s had a medical emergency that caused him to lose control of his SUV and drive into a retention pond near the intersection of Rangeline Road and State Road 434 in Longwood, a suburb of Orlando, Florida. The man and his two dogs were trapped inside the sinking vehicle as water started to fill the cabin.

Fortunately, several Longwood first responders, including police officers and firefighters, arrived at the scene and entered the water to rescue the man and his dogs. Police Officer Bryce Snyder reached the driver’s side door, broke the window with a glass breaking tool, cut the seatbelt and pulled the man out of the vehicle. Firefighters Casey Minard, Caroline Gibson and Alex Coleman assisted in getting the man and the dogs to shore. The SUV sank into the pond shortly after the rescue.

How Are They Doing?

The man was taken to a hospital where he was treated for his injuries and is expected to make a full recovery. The dogs were also unharmed and reunited with their owner. Longwood Mayor Matt Morgan witnessed the rescue and praised the first responders for their quick and heroic actions. He said he plans to honor them at a future city commission meeting.

Why Is This Important?

This story is important because it shows the bravery and professionalism of the Longwood first responders who risked their lives to save another life and two furry friends. It also shows the importance of having proper tools and training for water rescue situations. It also reminds us to be careful when driving near bodies of water and to seek medical attention if we feel unwell behind the wheel.

This story is also inspiring because it shows how a community can come together to support each other in times of crisis. The mayor, the witnesses, the media and the public have all expressed their admiration and gratitude for the first responders and their concern for the man and his dogs. This story is a testament to the human spirit and the bond between people and animals.
