Russia conducted another successful test of their hypersonic missile today as they continue to press their assault on Eastern Ukraine. The Russian navy launched the Zircon cruise missile from the Admiral Gorshkov frigate in the White Sea, hitting a practice target in the White Sea about 1,000 kilometers away.
Putin claims that the Zircon cruise missile is capable of achieving flight speed nine times the speed of sound with a range of over 600 miles. Russia further boasts that the Zircon and other hypersonic missiles under development are impossible to intercept with existing systems.
Of course, the United States Military is likely ahead of the curve with anti-missile technology. Still, this latest development in Russian Military might is certainly not good news.
This latest development demonstrates Russia's growing long-range strike capability and shows they are not backing down despite global condemnation. The international community is watching Russia closely as they continue to flex their military might. It remains to be seen what will happen next in this ongoing conflict, but one thing is clear: Russia is far from backing down.
In fact, in eastern Ukraine, Russia-backed separatists claim to have captured a railway city. Artillery bombardments credited for the victory are also blamed for the deaths of about 1,500 people.
While there has been a major European effort to convince Putin to end the war that continues to ravage economies and erode global security, little progress has been made. Fortunately, these efforts do not seek to placate or appease Putin:
"There should be no talk of ceasefires, or appeasing Putin. We need to make sure that Ukraine wins. And that Russia withdraws and that we never see this type of Russian aggression again,"
