The Incredible Raid That Ended Osama Bin Laden's Reign Of Terror And Avenged The 9/11 Attacks

A decade after 9/11, the man who kicked off the U.S. war on terror was found and killed by an elite team of Navy SEALs. Finding and taking out the most wanted terrorist in the world, Osama bin Laden, was no easy feat.

A Long Road

In 2007, U.S. intelligence agencies uncovered the names of some of bin Laden's couriers. The U.S. believed that these couriers knew how to find bin Laden or may be hiding with him.

Three years later, U.S. intelligence analysts connected one of the couriers to an Abbottabad compound. The fortress was heavily guarded with plenty of security and almost no trace of bin Laden.

Upon painstaking surveillance and excruciating investigation, intelligence confirmed that this location was the most likely hideout of the terrorist leader.

Mission Ready

President Obama finally sanctioned a raid on the compound and gave SEAL Team Six the green light to began training. The team did just that, working tirelessly, assaulting a replica of the compound over and over again to get it all just right.

On May 2, just a few days later, the SEALs launched on Operation Neptune Spear, a well planned and executed attack. The tense mission, which began a little after 1:00 pm Eastern Time, was wrapped up by 1:00 a.m.

Check out this incredible recreation of SEAL team 6 taking down Osama bin Laden:

The men took DNA samples to verify that it was, in fact, Osama bin Laden. His body was then buried at sea within 24 hours of his death per Islamic Law.

Global Significance

U.S. forces gathered plenty of useful information from the bin Laden compound. Ten hard drives, five computers, and over 100 other storage devices.

U.S. intelligence gleaned important information about bin Laden, al-Qaeda, and how the organization functioned. Bin Laden's death was a massive win for the U.S. as both the American people and the government were significantly affected by the event.

For those who were hit personally by the attack on 9/11, it gave some much-needed closure.

For those who supported Osama bin Laden and Al Qaeda around the world, his death was a symbol that no one was safe, no matter how well they hid.The United States could hit them anywhere and at anytime.

Naturally, the reactions from around the world were mixed, with some leaders criticizing the United States' actions while others praised the operation. Overall, military leaders consider the raid by SEAL Team Six an incredibly successful mission.
