U.S. Leads Multinational Coalition to Counter Houthi Threat in Red Sea

 December 19, 2023

In a significant development, the United States has announced the formation of a 10-nation coalition, named Operation Prosperity Guardian, to counter the escalating Houthi threat of missile and drone attacks on vessels in the Red Sea.

This multinational security initiative, as stated by US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin, is a response to the Iran-backed Houthi rebels' increased aggression against commercial shipping in a vital transit route that handles up to 12 percent of global trade.

The Coalition's Composition and Mission

The coalition includes the United Kingdom, Bahrain, Canada, France, Italy, Netherlands, Norway, Seychelles, and Spain.

These countries will contribute through joint patrols and intelligence support in the southern Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden.

The operation will be coordinated by the Combined Task Force 153, established in April 2022 to enhance maritime security in the region.

Escalation of Houthi Attacks

The Houthis have intensified their attacks on tankers, cargo ships, and other vessels, posing a significant threat to international maritime security and commerce.

Recently, they claimed responsibility for attacking two vessels, allegedly linked to Israel, in solidarity with Gaza.

These attacks are part of a broader campaign to pressure Israel following a severe conflict with Hamas.

U.S. Navy's Role and International Response

The U.S. Navy, with its advanced capabilities, is at the forefront of this initiative.

Three U.S. Navy destroyers – USS Carney, USS Stethem, and USS Mason – are actively patrolling the Bab el-Mandeb Strait to deter and respond to Houthi attacks.

The U.S. has also urged the United Nations Security Council to take action against these threats, emphasizing the need to uphold the principle of freedom of navigation.

Implications

This coalition marks a decisive step in addressing the Houthi threat in the Red Sea.

It underscores the international community's commitment to safeguarding vital maritime routes and upholding international law.

The world now watches as this coalition embarks on its mission, hoping it will contribute to regional stability and the safety of global trade routes.
