WATCH: Marine Company B, 1st Reconnaissance Battalion's Daring Mission into the Heart of Taliban Territory

The 1st Reconnaissance Battalion is a reconnaissance unit of the United States Marine Corps. The unit is based at Camp Pendleton, California and falls under the command of the 1st Marine Division. Company B is a part of this battalion.

Sangin is a town in the Helmand province of Afghanistan, and was the scene of heavy fighting during the War in Afghanistan. U.S. Marines with Company B, 1st Reconnaissance Battalion were likely deployed to Sangin to conduct reconnaissance and surveillance operations, gather intelligence, and possibly conduct offensive or defensive combat operations. The area was known to be a hotbed of Taliban activity, and the Marines' mission would have been to gather information to help protect coalition forces and disrupt Taliban operations.
