Footage of a massive explosion in northeastern Ukraine has ignited controversy over Russia's use of powerful non-nuclear weapons.
According to Newsweek, videos began circulating on Russian and Ukrainian media outlets on Tuesday, showing what seems to be a "vacuum bomb" attack on the town of Vovchansk in Kharkiv Oblast.
Pro-Kremlin sources assert that the explosion was caused by an ODAB-9000, a three-ton thermobaric bomb nicknamed "the father of all bombs." However, Ukrainian officials dispute this claim, suggesting that a less powerful munition was employed.
Debate Over Weapon Identification Intensifies
The footage, which shows a large bomb descending from the sky before detonating in the already war-torn city, has sparked a heated debate among military experts and observers.
Russian military bloggers have enthusiastically shared the video, insisting that it depicts the first use of the ODAB-9000 in the ongoing conflict. One prominent pro-Kremlin channel described the weapon as "the most powerful non-nuclear munition in the world."
Ukrainian sources, however, have pushed back against these assertions. The operational and tactical unit of Kharkiv released a statement claiming that the information about the ODAB-9000's use is false.
Ukrainian Officials Challenge Russian Claims
Vitaliy Sarantsev, spokesperson for the Kharkiv OTU, provided a counterargument to the Russian narrative.
For the use of this munition, a suitable carrier is required, which theoretically could be, for example, a Tu-160 strategic bomber, but the movement of such aircraft was not recorded.
Sarantsev suggested that a smaller, less powerful weapon was likely used, and that Russian propagandists were exaggerating the strike's impact to demoralize Ukrainian forces and civilians.
Experts Weigh In on Bomb Identification
The difficulty in conclusively identifying the weapon from the available footage has led to varied expert opinions on the matter.
Dr. Sidharth Kaushal, a researcher at the Royal United Services Institute, noted that while the exact model of the bomb remains unclear, the use of thermobaric weapons in Ukraine is not uncommon. He pointed out that Russia has previously employed other vacuum bombs, such as those launched from TOS-1 and TOS-2 rocket systems.
Kaushal also highlighted the broader context of Russia's increasing air and missile activity in Ukraine, stating:
Russia is stepping up its air and missile activity both close to the front lines and in rear areas. Missile strikes on the rear are designed to stress Ukraine's energy grid and deplete interceptor stockplies ahead of the winter.

The strike on Vovchansk comes shortly after Ukrainian forces recaptured the town's chemical plant from Russian troops. This recent bombing has been interpreted by some as a retaliatory action for the territorial loss.
