According to Newsweek, a detailed analysis using nuclear weapon simulation tools reveals the catastrophic impact Russia's most powerful intercontinental ballistic missile would have on major U.S. cities, with potential casualties ranging from hundreds of thousands to millions.

The study focuses on Russia's R-36M2, also known as the SS-18 Satan, which carries a yield equivalent to 20 megatons of TNT and has a range of up to 10,000 miles. The simulation, created by nuclear technology historian Alex Wellerstein, demonstrates the weapon's devastating effects across different damage zones, from the immediate fireball radius to extended areas of thermal radiation and blast damage.

Devastating Impact Analysis Across Major Metropolitan Areas

New York City would face the highest casualties among the analyzed cities, with an estimated 5.4 million fatalities and 5.6 million injuries within a 24-hour period. The blast effects would extend to neighboring areas, including New Brunswick and Stamford, affecting a total population of over 16 million people within the full blast range.

Washington D.C., the nation's capital, would suffer approximately 1.6 million deaths and 2 million injuries, with the fireball radius encompassing Capitol Hill. The total affected population within the blast range would exceed 6 million people.

Los Angeles presents a particularly concerning scenario with projected casualties of 2.7 million deaths and 4.3 million injuries. The thermal radiation effects would impact surrounding communities, including Santa Monica, Calabasas, Long Beach, and parts of Pomona.
