Tensions between Israel and Ireland have reached a critical point in the midst of the ongoing Gaza conflict.
According to Military.com, Israel announced its decision to close its embassy in Ireland, citing what Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar described as Ireland's "extreme anti-Israel policies" as Palestinian casualties in Gaza approach 45,000.
The diplomatic rupture follows Ireland's recent actions, including its decision to formally intervene in South Africa's case against Israel at the International Court of Justice, which accuses Israel of genocide in Gaza.
Ireland, along with Norway, Spain, and Slovenia, had previously announced their recognition of a Palestinian state in May, prompting Israel to recall its ambassador to Dublin.
Diplomatic Fallout Intensifies
Irish Prime Minister Simon Harris strongly rejected Israel's characterization of Ireland's position. His response on social media platform X emphasized Ireland's commitment to peace and international law rather than anti-Israel sentiment.
Ireland's deputy premier and foreign affairs minister, Micheal Martin, explained his country's position regarding the genocide case. The Irish government expressed concern about narrow interpretations of genocide potentially leading to reduced civilian protection.
The diplomatic crisis unfolds against the backdrop of mounting casualties in Gaza, where the Palestinian death toll has reached alarming numbers since the conflict began following Hamas's October 7, 2023 attack on Israel.
Gaza Humanitarian Crisis Deepens
Israeli forces continue their military operations in northern Gaza, with recent airstrikes causing significant civilian casualties. A strike on the Khalil Aweida school in Beit Hanoun resulted in at least 15 deaths, including multiple family members.
In Gaza City, three separate airstrikes targeting buildings housing displaced people claimed 17 lives, including women and children. Survivor Yahia al-Yazji shared his devastating experience, as stated:
We woke up to the strike. I woke up with the rubble on top of me. I found my wife with her head and skull visible, and my daughter's intestines were gone. My wife was three months pregnant.
The conflict has also claimed the life of Al Jazeera journalist Ahmed al-Lawh in central Gaza, along with three civil defense workers, including the agency's head in Nuseirat.
Conflict Takes Heavy Human Toll
The war's devastation continues to mount since Hamas's initial attack that killed approximately 1,200 people in Israel and resulted in over 200 hostages being taken. Gaza's Health Ministry reports that the Israeli military response has resulted in nearly 45,000 Palestinian casualties.
Israel maintains its military operations are targeting terrorist cells and meeting points, while humanitarian organizations express growing concern about civilian casualties. The Health Ministry's statistics indicate that more than half of the casualties are women and children.
