A tragic midair collision between a military helicopter and a commercial airliner near Reagan National Airport resulted in multiple fatalities.

According to the Kansas City Star, Staff Sgt. Ryan Austin O'Hara was among three military personnel killed when their UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter collided with American Airlines flight 5342 from Wichita on Wednesday night, claiming over 60 lives.

The devastating crash occurred during a routine training mission, causing the passenger plane to explode and crash into the Potomac River. Chief Warrant Officer Andrew Loyd Eaves and Capt. Rebecca M. Lobach were also aboard the military helicopter at the time of the incident. The collision left no survivors from either aircraft.

Dedicated soldier leaves behind young family and military legacy

O'Hara, a 28-year-old native of Lilburn, Georgia, demonstrated remarkable dedication to military service throughout his career. His journey began at Parkview High School, where he spent four years in the Marine Corps Junior ROTC program before graduating in 2014. The young soldier's commitment to service earned him several prestigious awards, including the Army Good Conduct Medal and NATO Medal.

Chief Warrant Officer Josh Muehlendorf, who served alongside O'Hara in Savannah in 2020, shared his memories of the fallen soldier. He emphasized O'Hara's exceptional dedication to his duties and profound concern for his fellow service members.

Muehlendorf also provided insight into the flight conditions near Reagan National Airport, noting that he had extensive experience with the same route. He described the airspace as highly controlled with strict procedures in place.

Military and state officials respond to unprecedented aviation disaster

Major General Trevor J. Bredenkamp, commander of the Joint Task Force for the National Capital Region, emphasized the military's commitment to supporting the investigation. The National Transportation Safety Board and Federal Aviation Administration are working together to determine the cause of this catastrophic event.

Georgia Governor Brian Kemp acknowledged the loss of two Georgia natives in the crash. He expressed particular sadness over the deaths of O'Hara and American Airlines pilot Sam Lilley, both of whom shared a passion for aviation and service to others.

The military community has rallied to support O'Hara's surviving family, including his wife and one-year-old son. His former colleagues remember him as an exemplary soldier who prioritized safety and excellence in his work.

Final moments of decorated military career

O'Hara's service record spans nearly a decade, beginning in July 2014 when he became a UH-60 helicopter repairer. His deployment to Afghanistan from March to August 2017 further demonstrated his commitment to serving his country.

Chief Warrant Officer Muehlendorf recalled O'Hara's dedication to his role, stating:

Ryan was one of the most dedicated, disciplined, and committed soldiers I've ever worked with. He was chiefly concerned with the safety of his crews; the people he was training. He wanted everybody to execute their job with perfection and to come home safely.
