A routine traffic stop near Augusta turned deadly when James Blake Montgomery opened fire on two Columbia County deputies.
According to FOX 5 Atlanta, Deputy Brandon Sikes was killed, and Deputy Gavin White was critically wounded after Montgomery, who initially appeared cooperative during a domestic violence protective order service, suddenly attacked them with a converted fully-automatic weapon on I-20 near Exit 196.
The incident occurred Saturday night when deputies approached Montgomery's motor home to serve him with a temporary protective order related to a domestic violence case involving his wife. Sheriff Clay Whittle reported that Montgomery seemed understanding of the situation until the deputies began walking back to their patrol vehicle.
Deadly confrontation unfolds into complex investigation
Multiple law enforcement agencies responded to the scene after Montgomery retreated to his motor home, initiating a tense standoff. The situation escalated when drone surveillance revealed potential explosive devices inside the vehicle.
Law enforcement teams, including U.S. Marshals Service, Georgia State Patrol, and two bomb squads, worked methodically to contain the situation. Their careful approach proved warranted when they discovered pipe bombs, including one with a remote switch, multiple firearms, and substantial ammunition.
The standoff reached its conclusion when Montgomery attempted to flee in his motor home but crashed into cable barriers. Officers found him deceased inside the vehicle.
Suspect's criminal activities surface after deadly encounter
Sheriff Whittle revealed that Montgomery operated an illegal steroid distribution operation. Investigators discovered suspicious materials in his motor home, including mysterious jars with protruding pipes containing unidentified liquids.
Law enforcement officials disclosed that Montgomery had appeared before a judge just two days prior to the shooting. The court had ordered him to surrender all weapons to the sheriff's office.
Sheriff Whittle shared Montgomery's ominous warning:
We found some … jars – I don't really know how to describe that other than to tell you they're clear jars with pipes coming out of them. There's some type of liquid in them, we do not know what that is at this time. We don't know whether that may be some type of bomb-making material, or whether it may be some type of drug paraphernalia.
Community mourns fallen deputy while another fights for recovery
Deputy White underwent surgery for injuries to his sinus and oral cavities. Despite the severity of his wounds, he remains communicative and has control of his limbs, though faces a challenging recovery ahead.
Deputy Sikes, who had served since 2018, leaves behind his wife Amber, who also works at the sheriff's office. His death has deeply affected the law enforcement community, prompting responses from state officials, including Governor Brian Kemp and Senator Jon Ossoff.
Sheriff Whittle expressed his department's grief:
Unfortunately, we're going to have to have a funeral for a very brave officer who has been with us since 2018. He was one of our crime suppression officers. His name is Brandon Sikes. He is survived by his wife, Amber, who is also an employee here of the sheriff's office. And it's going to be a difficult time for the sheriff's office, but we're going to get through this. We just ask that everyone keeps us in their thoughts and prayers.
