Chinese ship accused of laser strike on German aircraft

A dramatic escalation in military tensions has unfolded in the Red Sea as Germany accuses a Chinese warship of launching an unprovoked laser attack on its surveillance aircraft.

According to Breitbart, Germany has summoned the Chinese ambassador to Berlin following the incident where a Chinese warship fired a laser weapon at a German aircraft participating in the European Union's Aspides mission. The German Foreign Ministry has issued a formal diplomatic protest against Beijing.

The German Foreign Ministry strongly condemned the attack, stating "The Chinese military employed a laser" that endangered both the aircraft and its crew. They emphasized that "endangering German personnel & disrupting the operation is entirely unacceptable."

Critical EU Mission Under Threat

The targeted aircraft was a surveillance platform operated by a defense contractor with civilian pilots and German military personnel managing the intelligence equipment. The mission was part of the EU's Aspides deployment in the Red Sea.

The EU mission's primary objective is to protect civilian shipping by monitoring and intercepting Houthi missiles. Officials stress that this operation is separate from American-led strikes against Iran-backed Houthi forces.

Following the laser incident, the aircraft was forced to return to its Middle East base. German news magazine Der Spiegel reports that potential damage to the aircraft's sensitive sensor suite, particularly vulnerable to directed-energy weapons, remains under investigation.

Pattern of Hostile Encounters

A German military spokesman revealed that the Chinese warship had been spotted in the area multiple times before the attack. The vessel initiated the laser attack without provocation or prior communication during a routine mission.

The spokesman emphasized that the Chinese warship's actions demonstrated a willful disregard for safety, stating they "accepted the risk of endangering people and equipment." This aggressive stance marks a significant escalation in military tensions in the region.

This isn't the first challenging incident for German forces in the Red Sea. Last year, the German Frigate Hessen mistakenly fired two missiles at a U.S. Reaper drone due to communication failures with American forces, though both missiles missed their target.

Advanced Warfare Technology Deployment

The laser attack highlights the growing role of directed-energy weapons in modern military operations. These systems have gained prominence particularly following lessons from the Ukraine war regarding asymmetric warfare costs.

The U.S. military's HELIOS system, deployed on the USS Preble, demonstrates the advanced capabilities of such weapons. The 60kw system can defeat fast attack craft and drones, with the ability to either destroy targets or merely disable their systems.

Israel and Britain have also made significant advances in laser weapon technology. Britain's 'Dragonfire' laser has shown remarkable results, including the ability to melt through mortar rounds, and is scheduled for deployment in Ukraine for live testing.

International Security Implications

The incident represents a significant breach of international military protocols, leading Germany to demand immediate diplomatic accountability from China. The attack has raised serious concerns about the safety of EU operations in the Red Sea.

The German Foreign Ministry's response indicates this event could have lasting implications for German-Chinese relations. The summoning of China's ambassador underscores the gravity with which Germany views this unprovoked attack.

This confrontation highlights the increasing militarization of the Red Sea region and the growing tensions between Western nations and China in international waters. The incident may lead to enhanced security measures for EU military aircraft operating in the area.
