Police raid Le Pen’s party over loan probe

 July 10, 2025

A dramatic dawn raid at Marine Le Pen's National Rally party headquarters has sent shockwaves through French politics, as authorities intensify their scrutiny of the opposition party's finances.

According to Breitbart, approximately twenty financial brigade police officers, armed and wearing bulletproof vests, accompanied by two investigating judges, conducted an extensive search of the party's Paris offices early Wednesday morning. The operation, which began at 8:50 AM, involved the seizure of computers, documents, and internal correspondence.

The raid is part of an ongoing investigation into alleged illegal loans used to finance Marine Le Pen's 2022 presidential campaign, subsequent legislative elections, and the 2024 European Parliament elections. National Rally officials claim this action represents a politically motivated attack on France's leading opposition party, which recently secured a decisive victory over President Macron's coalition in European elections.

Multiple Investigations Target Opposition Party

European prosecutors launched a separate probe on Tuesday, focusing on allegations that the party misappropriated 4.3 million euros between 2019 and 2024. The investigation centers on payments reportedly made to companies connected to Le Pen's relatives, adding another layer of complexity to the party's legal challenges.

Le Pen currently faces potential disqualification from public office for five years in a different case involving the alleged misuse of EU party funds. The case, which is under appeal, has become a focal point in discussions about the treatment of opposition parties in France.

The National Rally reportedly had over 20 million euros in outstanding loans by the end of 2023, with some dating back to 2007. Christian Charpy, head of the National Commission for Campaign Accounts and Political Financing, suggests these unpaid loans could be interpreted as disguised donations, potentially violating campaign finance regulations.

Party Leaders Denounce Political Persecution

National Rally President Jordan Bardella strongly condemned the raid, characterizing it as unprecedented harassment of an opposition party. He emphasized that many of the loans under investigation came from party activists who stepped in when traditional banking institutions refused to work with the populist party.

The seizure of internal documents and correspondence has raised concerns about political motivations behind the investigation. Party officials argue that the spectacular nature of the raid serves primarily to create media spectacle rather than pursue justice.

Party MP Sébastien Chenu suggested that the legal actions represent a desperate attempt by the establishment to prevent the National Rally from gaining power through legitimate democratic means. The timing and manner of the raid have fueled accusations of judicial harassment.

Growing Pattern of Legal Challenges to European Populists

Similar situations have emerged across Europe, with right-wing populist parties facing increased legal scrutiny. The Alternative for Germany (AfD) party confronts potential prohibition after being labeled an "extremist" organization by German authorities.

Recent cases include the reopening of charges against former Czech PM Andrej Babiš, who leads polls for upcoming elections, and the controversial banning of Călin Georgescu from Romanian elections following his unexpected first-round victory. These incidents have contributed to growing concerns about the use of legal mechanisms to challenge populist movements.

The timing of these investigations coincides with rising support for nationalist and populist parties across Europe. Critics argue that established political structures increasingly rely on judicial interventions to counter their opponents' electoral success.
