 July 27, 2025

A quiet afternoon in Lorain, Ohio, turned tragic after three police officers were ambushed in a targeted shooting that left one dead and two others wounded.

According to Cleveland 19 News, Phillip Wagner was killed, and Brent Payne and Peter Gale were injured when a gunman opened fire on the officers during their lunch break on Wednesday.

Officers Phillip Wagner, 35, and Peter Gale, 51, were sharing a pizza during their lunch break when their meal was interrupted by gunfire. The shooter, identified as 28-year-old Michael Parker, reportedly used a high-powered rifle to carry out the attack. Officer Brent Payne, 47, responded to the scene after hearing reports and was also shot during the same incident. All three officers sustained serious injuries, and Officer Wagner succumbed to his wounds the following day.

Community Rallies Behind Fallen and Injured Officers

The Lorain community has rapidly mobilized in response to the tragedy. Residents have begun organizing donation drives, fundraisers, and benefit events to support the officers and their families as they deal with the aftermath. Public mourning for Officer Wagner began outside Lorain City Hall, where people have gathered to leave flowers and pay their respects at the Lorain Police Memorial. Wagner is remembered by many not just for his service but for his compassion and willingness to help others, both on and off duty.

Wagner’s career began in 2018 after graduating from the police academy. Before his death, he had served with both the Lorain and Sheffield Village police departments. A U.S. Marine Corps veteran, he leaves behind his wife and three children.

Wagner Remembered for Heroism and Dedication

In the days following Wagner’s death, stories of his courage began to emerge more widely. One such example involved a time he aided a couple stranded on the side of the road by physically stopping traffic and staying with them until they got home safely. Community members are now sharing similar memories across social media and public gatherings.

Officer Payne, who rushed to assist his fellow officers during the ambush, is now recovering from multiple surgeries at MetroHealth Medical Center in Cleveland. He is expected to undergo further operations, but his condition is gradually improving, according to authorities. Payne has been widely recognized in the past for acts of public service. In 2016, he saved a woman's life by performing CPR and using a defibrillator while working part-time for Grafton Village Police. That incident led officials to ensure all patrol cars and city buildings were equipped with AED units.

Peter Gale Sustains Injuries, Praised by Former Partner

Officer Gale, who began working for the Lorain Police Department in February 2022, was also injured in the attack. Before joining the Lorain PD, he spent more than a decade working at the Erie County Adult Probation Department and part-time at the Perkins Township Police Department. Keith Williams, a former co-worker and close friend of Gale’s at the probation department, described Gale emotionally in interviews. “He would do anything for you, no matter what time it is,” Williams said, emphasizing Gale's selfless nature.

Williams also reflected on their deep personal connection, saying they had worked closely for 15 years and met up regularly, even after Gale changed departments. “He’s not my natural brother, but I wouldn’t change him for anybody,” Williams shared.

Relationships and Personal Loss in the Aftermath

According to Williams, the shooting deeply affected Gale both physically and emotionally. “Just talking to him, I know that he’s hurt because I know that he cares,” he said, speaking to Gale’s empathy and long-standing professionalism in his law enforcement career.

Wagner’s passing has touched not only those who worked with him but also members of the local community who knew him as a Marine and a public servant. He is being remembered as a man who always went the extra mile for others—with traits of kindness and duty guiding his actions until the end. “Not only is he in it for the right reasons, but the courage to put yourself in those situations willingly is beyond honorable,” said Tim Kelly, referring to Payne and the bravery exhibited during the tragic event.

Investigation Ongoing as Support Builds

It remains unclear what motivated Michael Parker to open fire on the officers. Investigators continue to comb through evidence to determine whether the attack was premeditated or linked to any prior encounters with law enforcement.

City officials are urging the public to allow space for the families to grieve while also encouraging residents to participate in the various community-led efforts supporting the victims. Police departments from neighboring cities have also offered support both emotionally and operationally.

As recovery continues for the two surviving officers and funeral preparations begin for Officer Wagner, the city of Lorain stands united in grief and solidarity for its fallen and injured heroes.
