Brent Hinds remembered after tragic crash

Brent Hinds, the influential co-founder of metal band Mastodon, died Wednesday night in a motorcycle crash in Atlanta.

According to New York Post, Hinds, who was 51, was killed when his Harley-Davidson motorcycle collided with a BMW SUV that failed to yield while turning at an intersection.

The collision occurred at approximately 11:35 p.m., according to a statement released Thursday by the Atlanta Police Department. Officers responded to the scene and discovered Hinds unresponsive. Medical personnel arrived shortly thereafter and declared him deceased at the scene.

The driver of the BMW, a woman, remained at the scene following the crash. No further details have been released about whether charges will be filed, but the investigation into the fatal incident remains ongoing. The Fulton County Medical Examiner’s office has confirmed Hinds’ death.

Legacy includes decades of acclaimed music

Born William Brent Hinds in Pelham, Alabama, in 1974, Hinds developed his musical talents early. He relocated to Atlanta in the 1990s after attending a performance by Troy Sanders’ band in Birmingham. That connection would later become pivotal to his career.

In 2000, Hinds, alongside Brann Dailor, Bill Kelliher, and Troy Sanders, co-founded Mastodon in Atlanta. The band rapidly gained recognition for its intricate and powerful sound, with Hinds serving as lead guitarist and one of the group's vocalists.

Over the next two decades, Mastodon released several celebrated albums, including their 2002 debut “Remission,” the 2004 concept album “Leviathan,” and 2017’s Grammy-nominated “Emperor of Sand.” Their most recent album, “Hushed and Grim,” debuted in 2021 to strong critical acclaim.

Departure from the band earlier this year

In March 2025, Mastodon and Hinds parted ways. The band announced at the time that the split was a mutual decision, adding that they remained proud of the history and music they created together over 25 years.

However, tension surrounding the situation resurfaced in June 2025 when Hinds publicly claimed he was forced out. In a comment on the band's Instagram video, he accused his former bandmates of expelling him for being himself.

“They kicked me out of the band for embarrassing them for being who I am,” Hinds wrote. He criticized his former bandmates' vocal capabilities and suggested the breakup had been less amicable than initially described.

Highly regarded live performer across the globe

Hinds built a strong reputation for his live performances, appearing at major international music festivals and venues. Among his notable onstage moments were shows at Riot Fest in Chicago in 2024 and Mexico Metal Fest in 2023.

He also performed at Rumsey Playfield in New York City’s Central Park in 2015 and played a memorable set at Rock in Rio in Rio de Janeiro the same year. His stage presence and distinctive guitar style contributed significantly to Mastodon’s global following.

Fans admired his creativity and authenticity, considering him one of the most original voices in heavy metal. Tributes from the music community poured in on social media following news of his death.

Bandmates and fans share heartfelt tributes

Sanders, Kelliher, and Dailor released a joint statement on Instagram expressing profound grief. “We are in a state of unfathomable sadness and grief,” they began, confirming Hinds' death as the result of a tragic accident.

“We are heartbroken, shocked, and still trying to process the loss of this creative force with whom we’ve shared so many triumphs, milestones, and the creation of music that has touched the hearts of so many,” they said. They asked the public to respect the privacy of Hinds’ family, friends, and fans.

Followers of the band also shared memories and emotional messages. One fan described Hinds as “one of the nicest dudes” and extended love to his former bandmates and family.

Community mourns a singular musical voice

Another longtime follower described it as a “devastating” loss and said, “All the love to you all.” The comment threads were filled with stories from fans who felt touched by his music and spirit, many calling him a “legend” and an inspiration.

“It was an amazing privilege to know him and watch him achieve his dreams,” one person wrote. Thousands expressed condolences and sorrow over losing such a prominent figure in the metal community.

Officials have not indicated when more details of the crash investigation will be released. At this time, the Atlanta Police Department has not confirmed whether any charges will be brought against the other driver involved.

The impact of a trailblazing artist

Despite the difficulties surrounding his departure from Mastodon earlier this year, Hinds remained a beloved figure in the heavy metal world. His influence can be heard in an entire generation of bands who cite Mastodon as pivotal to their development.

The circumstances of his death highlight the vulnerability of even the most larger-than-life figures. The suddenness of the tragedy has left fans, friends, and musical collaborators grappling with the loss of someone they viewed as fundamental to the genre.

As tributes continue to pour in, Hinds is being remembered for his artistry, individuality, and the indelible mark he left on heavy music. His contributions will likely resonate with fans for years to come.
