A horrific crime scene unfolded in Queens, New York, when a 76-year-old man was found tied and stabbed, while his 77-year-old wife's body was discovered severely burned in their residence.
According to ABC News, Frank Olton and Maureen Olton were discovered deceased in their Bellerose home after their son, a fire department EMT, was alerted by the couple's alarm monitoring service. The couple's deaths were confirmed around 3:30 p.m. on Monday, approximately 20 minutes after the suspect was captured on surveillance footage near their property.
Police have identified Jamel McGriff, 42, as the primary suspect in what authorities describe as a "horrific double homicide, robbery and arson." McGriff was last seen on Tuesday pawning two cellphones in the Bronx, prompting law enforcement to warn the public about his dangerous status.
Suspect's Calculated Method of Home Invasion
McGriff's strategy involved going door-to-door in the Bellerose neighborhood, asking residents if he could charge his cellphone. Several homeowners turned him away before he approached the Oltons' residence.
Surveillance footage captured McGriff speaking with Frank Olton around 10:18 a.m., initially gaining access to the backyard. The suspect then entered the home through a rear door with Mr. Olton.
The suspect remained inside the Oltons' home for nearly five hours before departing at approximately 3:08 p.m., carrying both a paper bag and a duffel bag. Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch noted his attire included black clothing and dark blue jeans.
Violent Criminal History Raises Questions
McGriff's criminal record spans several decades, including a 16-year prison sentence for a 2006 robbery conviction. The suspect is currently on parole and wanted for two recent robbery attempts.
Law enforcement officials revealed McGriff allegedly attempted to rob a GameStop store in Harlem this July. In a separate incident, he was thwarted at a Manhattan Verizon store when an employee recognized his fake weapon.
Additionally, McGriff failed to register as a sex offender last year, which should have resulted in a parole violation. This oversight has raised concerns about the effectiveness of the parole system.
Investigation Reveals Disturbing Crime Scene Details
Firefighters discovered Frank Olton's body in the basement, bound to a pole with multiple stab wounds. Maureen Olton's remains were found on the first floor, having sustained severe burns.
Police Commissioner Tisch emphasized that there appeared to be no prior connection between McGriff and the victims. The encounter seems to have been completely random, making the crime even more disturbing.
The fire marshal has officially ruled the fire as intentionally set, though the exact causes of death for both victims are still under investigation.
Manhunt Intensifies as Public Safety Concerns Mount
A regional fugitive task force combining local, state, and federal officers has been mobilized to locate and apprehend McGriff. Law enforcement officials are working diligently to track down the suspect before he can harm anyone else.
Police have issued a stern warning to the public about McGriff's method of operation, urging residents not to allow strangers into their homes. The NYPD has emphasized the importance of remaining vigilant, especially when encountering unexpected visitors.
The tragic deaths of Frank and Maureen Olton have highlighted the vulnerability of elderly residents and the potential dangers of opening doors to strangers. Their son's discovery of the crime scene has added another layer of tragedy to this already devastating case.
