U.S. Weighs Drone Strikes on Venezuelan Drug Targets

 September 28, 2025

The United States is reportedly preparing a significant escalation in its strategy against international drug trafficking, eyeing drone strikes deep within Venezuelan territory.

According to the New York Post, the Trump administration is considering targeted drone operations against drug networks operating inside Venezuela. However, President Donald Trump has not yet signed off on the final plans, according to sources familiar with the developments.

Draft plans under consideration by U.S. officials include conducting airstrikes against members of drug cartels and laboratory facilities believed to be involved in the production and distribution of narcotics. These would mark an expansion of the administration’s counter-narcotics campaign, which had previously focused on boats linked to Venezuelan drug operations operating in the Caribbean.

Since early September, the United States has carried out at least three strikes at sea, targeting vessels suspected of involvement in trafficking. Officials say the operations resulted in 17 fatalities, although the government has not released public evidence confirming that any drugs were found on the boats. An official in the Dominican Republic stated separately that drugs were recovered from waters near the site of one such strike. These military activities come amid heightened rhetoric from President Trump, who, during his 2024 campaign, pledged to make curbing the flow of illegal drugs into the U.S. a central focus. Speaking recently about Venezuela, Trump said, “We’ll see what happens… Venezuela is sending us their gang members, their drug dealers, and drugs. It’s not acceptable.”

Trump Administration Expands Military Presence

Accompanying the increased operational tempo, the U.S. has deployed at least eight naval vessels to the region and positioned multiple F-35 fighter jets nearby to support potential future action. Sources familiar with the current deliberations suggested that drone strikes inside Venezuela could be launched within weeks, although no formal timeline has been released.

The proposed drone strikes would represent a step beyond previous maritime-centered tactics, directly targeting infrastructure and leadership within Venezuelan territory. According to reports, four individuals with knowledge of the unfolding plans confirmed that both people and facilities involved in drug operations would be potential strike targets. While some elements of the administration are pushing forcefully for escalation, others have urged caution, noting that military action inside Venezuela carries significant geopolitical risks. President Trump has yet to make a final decision, leaving the possibility of delay or revision to the strategy open.

Venezuela Denies Responsibility, Proposes Dialogue

Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro has pushed back against accusations that his government is involved in drug trafficking. He has consistently denied any role in allowing narcotics to flow from the Venezuelan border into the United States. Behind the scenes, however, Maduro has reportedly sent messages to U.S. intermediaries suggesting a willingness to make concessions if it would stop further strikes. Several weeks ago, Maduro authored a letter to President Trump requesting diplomatic dialogue—a move that appears to reflect growing concern within Caracas over mounting U.S. military actions.

Despite this message, the Trump administration has rejected any suggestion of easing its approach. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt dismissed Maduro’s letter, stating, “Frankly, I think there were a lot of lies that were repeated by Maduro in that letter, and the administration’s position on Venezuela has not changed.”

U.S. Offers Bounty As Pressure Mounts

In line with the tougher stance, the United States also recently publicized a $50 million reward for information that leads to Maduro’s arrest. Previously, Washington had declared the Maduro government illegitimate and lobbied for international support to isolate the Venezuelan leader.

Still, even as tensions escalate, the two nations continue to coordinate on some limited matters. U.S. officials have confirmed ongoing cooperation with Venezuela in areas such as deportation processing, suggesting some functional lines of communication remain open. The pressure campaign comes during a period of dire economic strain in Venezuela. Years of U.S. sanctions have compounded the country’s economic troubles, leading to widespread poverty and social unrest across the country.

Questions Remain Over Evidence and Impact

Despite the military engagement, the U.S. has not published evidence that the maritime strikes conducted in September actually disrupted drug shipments. This has led to questions about the effectiveness and transparency of the campaign.

An official based in the Dominican Republic claimed drugs were seen in the water after one of the targeted boats was destroyed, offering minimal public confirmation of the mission’s success. However, there has been no statement from Washington verifying the details of those incidents. Press Secretary Leavitt reiterated the administration’s defense of the strikes, asserting, “We view the Maduro regime as illegitimate, and the president has clearly shown that he’s willing to use any means necessary to stop the illegal trafficking of deadly drugs from the Venezuelan regime into the United States of America.”

High Stakes for Both Leaders

For President Trump, the showdown with Venezuela is closely tied to his broader posture on crime and border security. The move to possibly authorize drone strikes comes as he leans into promises made during his campaign to combat the drug trade aggressively at its source.

For President Maduro, the growing U.S. military presence near the Venezuelan border intensifies both diplomatic and domestic pressures. With elections approaching in Venezuela and international isolation deepening, Maduro faces increasing challenges to maintain control and credibility. Whether further strikes will be ordered remains uncertain, but the situation marks a potentially volatile stage in U.S.-Venezuelan relations, with implications for regional stability and the future of anti-narcotics efforts in the hemisphere.
