Ex-wife of D.C. sniper shares haunting past

Is it possible for a private grudge to escalate into coordinated violence that terrorizes people across a whole region?

Dr. Mildred Muhammad, ex-wife of the notorious D.C. Sniper John Allen Muhammad, has come forward with chilling revelations about his threats against her life, as detailed in a recent report by the New York Post.

Her story, now spotlighted in a new Investigation Discovery documentary titled "Hunted by My Husband," paints a harrowing picture of emotional torment and a deadly obsession that culminated in a killing spree across Washington, D.C., in 2002.

Unmasking a Troubled Past with Deadly Consequences

Mildred met John in 1985 while he was stationed at Fort Lewis, Washington, charmed by what she described as his "beautiful smile." Their early years seemed promising as they built a family, marrying in 1988.

Yet, after John's return from Operation Desert Storm in 1990, a shoulder injury and a diagnosis of post-traumatic stress disorder transformed him. Mildred recalled to Fox News Digital, "the lights were on, but no one was home," as he withdrew into silence and rage.

His behavior grew cold and controlling, eroding her self-worth with psychological games and punishing silences. She learned to tiptoe around his moods, a survival tactic in a marriage that became a battlefield of the mind.

From Private Torment to Public Terror

Their 1999 split offered no relief, as John continued to stalk her, even after she changed her contact details. His chilling words, "You have become my enemy, and as my enemy, I will kill you," shared with Fox News Digital, were a grim prophecy of his intent.

In 2000, he escalated by kidnapping their three children for 18 months, taking them to Antigua in a bid to sever her ties. Mildred, fighting through unimaginable pain, told Fox News Digital there were "no words to describe the level of pain I was in."

Reunited with her children in 2001 after an emergency custody hearing, she thought the worst was behind her. But in 2002, investigators in Maryland delivered a staggering blow, naming John as the D.C. Sniper responsible for a wave of random shootings.

A Calculated Plan to Destroy a Family

Authorities theorized John’s ultimate goal was to kill Mildred, framing her death as a random act to gain custody of their children. His campaign of terror, executed with accomplice Lee Boyd Malvo, claimed 10 lives and injured three over three weeks in October 2002.

Investigators revealed to Mildred that she was the true target, with shootings occurring alarmingly close to her location. A man shot two miles away and another just down the street underscored how narrowly she escaped his crosshairs.

John’s sinister foresight was evident in a past conversation Mildred recalled, where he mused about terrorizing a small city single-handedly. His ability to mask emotions, wiping any trace from his face, hinted at the calculated malice behind his actions.

Surviving the Nightmare and Advocating for Others

After his arrest at a Maryland rest stop, alongside the then-17-year-old Malvo, the reign of terror ended, but the scars remained. John was executed in 2009, while Malvo serves a life sentence without parole.

Mildred and her children endured nights of grief, watching his face on television as the horror unfolded. She now channels that pain into advocacy, supporting survivors of domestic violence with a message of resilience.

Her journey, marked by silent suffering and a fight for her family, stands as a stark reminder of the hidden dangers in abusive relationships. For Mildred, speaking out during Domestic Violence Awareness Month is a call to action, urging others to seek help before tragedy strikes.
