Teen faces adult charges after Howard University homecoming shooting injures five

 November 20, 2025

A shocking act of violence disrupted a celebratory event at Howard University last month, leaving the community searching for answers. The incident, tied to the university's Yard Fest, has now led to the arrest of a young suspect.

Kaevaughn Dudley, 17, was apprehended on Friday, Nov. 14, in connection with a shooting at Howard University’s homecoming in Washington, D.C., that injured five people on Oct. 24, Fox News reported.

The teen faces serious charges, including five counts each of assault with intent to murder while armed and aggravated assault while armed. Authorities are trying him as an adult, signaling the gravity of the alleged crime.

Details of the Violent Encounter

Surveillance footage from Oct. 24 captured a tense moment before the shooting, as nine men dressed in black, some masked, approached a smaller group near the campus. Officials noted the larger group shouted, "What’s up with ya’ll?" only to receive a dismissive "Nothing" in response, per the U.S. Attorney’s Office of the District of Columbia.

That fleeting exchange apparently wasn’t enough to de-escalate the situation. Dudley allegedly stepped away from the group, pulled a handgun, and fired multiple shots at the unsuspecting victims.

Five individuals, including a 13-year-old, were struck in the hail of bullets. Dudley reportedly fled the scene immediately after, leaving chaos in his wake.

Victims and Immediate Response

Among the wounded were three adult males, one adult female, and a juvenile male, none of whom are Howard University students. Tragically, a Morgan State University student is now paralyzed from the chest down, while the female victim remains hospitalized, according to the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD).

Officers patrolling the homecoming event heard the gunfire and rushed to the scene. They quickly located the victims and ensured their transport to a nearby hospital for urgent care.

The swift response couldn’t undo the damage, but it likely saved lives. Still, the incident raises tough questions about safety at public campus events in urban centers like D.C.

Investigation and Evidence Uncovered

Investigators meticulously reviewed hundreds of hours of surveillance footage to pinpoint Dudley as the suspect. Their efforts paid off when members of MPD’s Criminal Apprehension Unit took him into custody without incident on Nov. 14.

At the scene, authorities recovered three handguns, including a privately made Polymer 80, a Smith & Wesson SD9 2.0, and a Glock 19, all 9mm. This arsenal underscores the dangerous reality of firearms finding their way into volatile situations.

Two 19-year-olds were initially detained for carrying a pistol without a license but were later cleared of involvement in the shooting. The focus remains squarely on Dudley, who awaits a preliminary hearing on Dec. 18.

Broader Implications for Campus Safety

This shooting isn’t just an isolated tragedy; it’s a glaring reminder of the vulnerabilities at large gatherings, even on college campuses meant to be safe havens. While Howard University hasn’t commented directly, the silence speaks volumes about the challenge of securing open events.

Urban campuses like this one often sit in areas where crime spills over, and progressive policies on juvenile offenders or gun control seem to falter under real-world pressures. Without stricter measures or better community outreach, these incidents risk becoming a grim norm.

Ultimately, the pain of the victims, especially the paralyzed student and the hospitalized woman, demands more than just an arrest. It calls for a hard look at how society balances celebration with security, and whether enough is being done to keep our young people safe from senseless violence.
