With the onset of Spring 1942, the war in the east was ready to begin again, but the problem of supplies, particularly of oil, was always a worry for the German High Command, so they devised an offensive to alleviate their fuel shortages as well as denying the Soviets their own supply. A city on the edge of the Volga River in eastern Ukraine was part of that plan. 

The city formerly known as Volgagrad was now known by the Soviet leader's name and while many people didn't even know it existed before the war, its name has been in every history book since as a symbol of what happens when two powerful forces clash.
