Amish woman charged after claiming she ‘gave son to God’ in lake

 September 12, 2025

A disturbing incident unfolded at Atwood Lake campgrounds when an Amish mother deliberately drowned her young son while experiencing what authorities described as a "spiritual delusion."

According to the New York Post, Ruth Miller, 40, was captured on police bodycam footage telling deputies she "gave her son to God" after drowning her 4-year-old child in the lake. The tragic events occurred on August 23 when Miller drove a golf cart into the water with her children.

The mother's erratic behavior was evident as she spoke to law enforcement at the scene. Miller repeatedly insisted she wasn't "crazy" while explaining her actions to the deputies, maintaining that God had instructed her to carry out these acts.

Religious Delusions Lead to Fatal Decision

The incident began earlier that morning when Miller and her husband, Marcus, participated in what they believed was a "test of faith." The couple had been swimming far out into the lake, convinced that God was communicating directly with them.

Marcus Miller reportedly became distraught after feeling he had failed his divine task due to insufficient faith. He returned to the lake alone around 6:30 a.m., where he would later be found deceased.

Following her husband's departure, Ruth Miller took their 4-year-old son in a golf cart and began driving recklessly around the campground. She then forced the child into the water, resulting in his death.

Multiple Lives Forever Changed by Tragedy

After drowning her young son, Miller drove the golf cart into the lake with three other children. Her 15-year-old daughter and 18-year-old twin sons, who were also in the vehicle, survived the incident.

The surviving children have been placed in the care of other family members while authorities process the case. The bodies of both Marcus Miller and the 4-year-old boy were recovered by dive teams later that day.

Sheriff Orvis Campbell revealed during a news conference that the couple had been experiencing what he termed a "spiritual delusion." This mental state apparently led them to believe they were receiving direct communication from God.

Legal Proceedings and Mental Health Defense

Miller faces multiple serious charges, including two counts of aggravated murder, two counts of domestic violence, and one count of child endangerment. She appeared in Tuscarawas County Common Pleas Court for her arraignment.

Her defense attorney, Ian N. Friedman, has expressed confidence in proving that Miller's actions were the result of severe mental illness. The legal team is pursuing a not guilty plea by reason of insanity.

Miller was initially taken to a secure hospital facility before being transferred to Tuscarawas County Jail. Her bond hearing is scheduled for September 25 at 1 p.m.

Impact Reverberates Through Amish Community

The tragic deaths of Marcus Miller and his young son have left an indelible mark on the local Amish community. The incident began with what authorities describe as a spiritual crisis involving both parents.

The case highlights the intersection of religious beliefs, mental health, and criminal justice. Miller's apparent mental state during the incident has become central to both the investigation and her legal defense.

A community grapples with understanding how a mother's religious convictions and possible mental health issues led to such devastating consequences. The outcome of Miller's case could have significant implications for how similar cases involving religious beliefs and mental illness are handled in the future.
