Ballot Box Fires in Oregon and Washington Mar Congressional Races

 October 29, 2024

A string of deliberate fires targeting ballot drop boxes in the Pacific Northwest has sparked heightened security measures just days before a pivotal election season.

According to AP News, incendiary devices were discovered at two ballot drop boxes on Monday - one in Portland, Oregon, and another in Vancouver, Washington, resulting in hundreds of destroyed ballots.

While Portland's fire suppression system managed to limit the damage to just three ballots, the Vancouver location suffered more extensive losses despite having similar protective measures.

The incidents occurred in a particularly sensitive area, as Vancouver is situated in Washington's 3rd Congressional District, where a tight race is underway between Democratic Rep. Marie Gluesenkamp Perez and Republican challenger Joe Kent. The timing and location of these attacks have raised concerns about potential election interference.

Security Measures Escalate After Coordinated Attacks

Clark County Auditor Greg Kimsey addressed the severity of the situation, leading to immediate enhanced security protocols. The county has implemented 24-hour monitoring of all drop boxes through hired staff members, who are instructed to observe and report suspicious activities to law enforcement without direct confrontation.

Authorities confirmed the connection between Monday's incidents and a previous attempt on October 8 at another Vancouver ballot box, where no ballots were damaged. Surveillance footage captured a Volvo approaching the Portland drop box shortly before security personnel discovered the fire.

The attacks have prompted election officials to modify their ballot collection schedules, with plans to retrieve ballots during evening hours to minimize overnight exposure to potential threats.

Bipartisan Condemnation And Voter Response

Both congressional candidates have strongly denounced the attacks. Gluesenkamp Perez called for increased law enforcement presence at ballot drop boxes, while Kent described the incidents as acts of terrorism in a social media statement.

Clark County Auditor Greg Kimsey said, "Heartbreaking. It's a direct attack on democracy."

Local voters have been forced to adapt their voting strategies in response to the attacks. John Burnside, a 68-year-old Vancouver resident who had deposited his ballot in the affected box, discovered the incident through news reports and has already requested replacement ballots.

State Officials Rally To Protect Electoral Process

Washington and Oregon state officials have mobilized resources to safeguard the voting process. Both states, which rely heavily on mail-in voting and drop boxes, have historically maintained robust ballot security measures.

Washington Secretary of State Steve Hobbs emphasized the state's commitment to protecting electoral integrity, while Governor Jay Inslee announced plans for enhanced 24-hour security around ballot collection sites.

Similar incidents have occurred elsewhere, with Phoenix recently reporting ballot destruction at a postal service drop box, indicating a potentially broader pattern of electoral targeting.

Democracy Under Fire An Emerging Pattern

The attacks represent a concerning trend in election security threats, occurring against the backdrop of increased scrutiny of ballot drop boxes since 2020. Six states have banned these boxes entirely, while others have implemented strict limitations on their use.

Despite these challenges, election officials remain committed to ensuring every vote counts. Voters affected by the incidents can verify their ballot status online and obtain replacements if necessary, demonstrating the resilience of the electoral system in the face of deliberate sabotage.
