A tragic collision between an American Airlines commercial flight and an Army Black Hawk helicopter claimed multiple lives over the Potomac River on Wednesday evening.

According to Daily Mail, at least 40 bodies have been recovered after American Airlines Flight 5342 collided with a military helicopter near Reagan Washington National Airport, killing all 64 people aboard, including promising young figure skaters, renowned coaches, and flight crew members.

The devastating crash claimed the lives of several figure skating athletes and coaches who were returning from a National Development Camp in Wichita, Kansas. Among the victims were teenage skaters Spencer Lane, 16, Brielle Beyer, 12, and Jinna Han, 13, along with World Figure Skating Championship winners Evgenia Shishkova, 53, and Vadim Naumov, 56.

The incident has deeply affected the figure skating community, with US Figure Skating confirming that multiple skaters, coaches and their family members were aboard the flight. Russian skating couple Shishkova and Naumov, who clinched the World Figure Skating Championship in pairs in 1994, were traveling back to DC after attending the US Figure Skating Championships in Kansas.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov expressed condolences for the Russian citizens lost in the crash. Their former coach, Ludmila Velikova, shared her grief, stating:

They were my favorite sports people. They were part of my first attempt at the world championship and became champions in 1994. They were talented and beautiful people. Apart from anything else, they were my children.

The tragic incident also claimed the lives of multiple family members traveling together, including the Livingston and Haynos families. The Livingstons - parents Peter and Donna, along with daughters Alydia, 11, and Everly, 14 - were all confirmed dead, while the Haynos family lost parents Roger and Stephanie along with their son Cory, who was training for future Olympics.

Military and civilian investigations launched into collision

US Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy reported that both aircraft were following normal flight patterns before the crash. The Pentagon, Department of Defense, and the Army have initiated investigations into the incident.

CBS News confirmed that dive teams recovered one of the two data recorders from the plane. DC Fire Chief John Donnelly stated that recovery efforts continue as they work to locate and identify all victims.

Former President Donald Trump questioned the actions of both the helicopter crew and air traffic controllers on what he described as a clear night, posting on Truth Social that the situation "should have been prevented."

Aftermath reveals profound impact on multiple communities

The crash has devastated multiple communities beyond the figure skating world. The Fairfax County school district confirmed the loss of three unidentified students and six parents, including two staff members.

Flight crew members Captain Jonathan Campos, First Officer Samuel Lilley, and flight attendants Danasia Elder and Ian Epstein also perished in the crash. Lilley, 29, was engaged to be married and approaching a promotion to captain.

The Black Hawk helicopter crew included Chief Warrant Officer 2 Andrew Eaves, whose death was confirmed by Mississippi Governor Tate Reeves, and Ryan O'Hara from Georgia, both conducting an annual proficiency training flight at the time of the collision.
