Death certificates from a Grand Haven Township, Michigan, home where eight family members died now suggest the mother was killed a day before her six children, a detail that deepens the horror of a case investigators are still piecing together.

Amanda "Mandy" Karolkiewicz, 39, and her six children, Keegan, 15; Bennet, 12; Smith, Ella, and Caroline, all 11; and Theodore, 5, died from gunshot wounds to the head inside their family home, the Daily Mail reported. Their deaths were classified as homicides. Kristopher Karolkiewicz, 47, Amanda's husband and the children's father, died by suicide. Investigators believe he carried out the killings with a semi-automatic handgun, fired at least eight shots, then set the home ablaze before taking his own life.

The gap between the dates on the death certificates is what has sharpened public attention. Amanda's certificate lists her date of death as "on or after" July 23. The children's certificates list July 24. Ottawa County Sheriff's Office Captain Jacob Sparks told News 8 it is "likely" Amanda died earlier than the children, though he cautioned that no exact timeline has been established.

"We don't have an exact timeline yet and are still working to establish that."

Bodies found in separate bedrooms across the home

Sparks told TMZ that Amanda's and Kristopher's bodies were found in the couple's bedroom. The six children were found in their respective bedrooms. Every death was caused by a gunshot wound to the head. The weapon was a semi-automatic handgun.

That layout, a mother and father in one room, six children scattered across others, raises questions investigators have not yet answered publicly. How much time passed between Amanda's death and the deaths of the children? Were the children asleep? The death certificates offer dates but no times, and the sheriff's office has not filled in those gaps.

Domestic mass shootings have become a grim recurring pattern across the country. Earlier this year, four people were found dead in a Livonia, Michigan, family home in another alleged domestic mass shooting, a case that drew similar shock in the same state.

Amanda's father: 'I struggle to understand the why'

Gary Anderson, Amanda's 78-year-old father, spoke to The Detroit News about the loss. His words carried grief without bitterness.

"I struggle to understand the why."

Anderson said he does not believe a person's legacy should be measured by the worst thing they did on the worst day of their life. He said that for the entire time he knew Kristopher, he was a good father and a good husband. He acknowledged he was aware of "some failures" that entered the couple's relationship but said only Amanda and Kristopher truly knew what caused the breakdown in their marriage.

"I love my daughter Mandy, and I loved those six children. In a way, I still love Kris."

Anderson's willingness to extend grace to the man who killed his daughter and grandchildren is striking. It also underscores how little the public knows about what happened inside that home in the days before July 24.

The case echoes other recent domestic tragedies that ended in murder-suicide. In Florida, four people were found dead with stab wounds in a Doral home under similar circumstances, a family destroyed behind closed doors.

Unverified Reddit posts add an unconfirmed layer

Reddit posts believed to have been written by Amanda have circulated since the deaths. The posts contain personal details that match Amanda's life, references to her husband, her children, her work. They allege Kristopher had an "emotional affair" with an intern described as a "younger, wilder" version of Amanda. They describe years of distrust and anger, couples and individual therapy, sobriety, and an incident in which Amanda allegedly shoved Kristopher after discovering the infidelity. The posts also claim Amanda was estranged from her father and her older sister, Molly.

But the family has not confirmed the posts are Amanda's. Emily Jones, a family spokesperson, told News 8 that the couple's loved ones have no way to verify who wrote them.

"It's very clear that whoever wrote that, they were using Reddit as an outlet to seek support in a bit of anonymity, because for whatever reason, they felt they couldn't seek it in their real lives."

Jones added a broader point about what the posts reveal, regardless of authorship.

"I think that that's sad in and of itself, whether it was Mandy or somebody else. It's sad if somebody feels like they can't speak their fears out loud outside of something like Reddit."

Whether or not Amanda wrote those posts, they cannot explain what happened on July 23 or July 24. Marital problems, even severe ones, do not account for what Kristopher is accused of doing. The Reddit posts offer a window into pain, not a motive for mass murder.

Investigators in other recent murder-suicide cases have faced similar difficulty establishing motive. In a Houston apartment standoff that ended with two people dead, authorities were left with more questions than answers about what drove the violence.

Amanda Karolkiewicz was a teacher and children's author

Before her death, Amanda worked as a substitute teacher at Grand Haven Area Public Schools. She also wrote a children's book called *The Magical Mantra* under a pen name. The pen name has not been publicly identified.

Jones, the family spokesperson, asked the public to remember the family as people, not as a case file or a set of Reddit posts.

"They were real people. They were wonderful people. And we want them to be remembered that way."

A GoFundMe has been established to help cover funeral costs for the family. The page names "Becky and Steve" as its beneficiaries, though neither has been publicly identified in connection with the case.

Domestic homicide cases involving children remain among the most difficult for communities to process. A retired Orlando officer was recently indicted for first-degree murder in the shooting death of his wife, another case where the violence happened behind closed doors, between people who were supposed to be safe with each other.

Key questions the investigation has not answered

The Ottawa County Sheriff's Office has not released a motive. It has not explained how much time elapsed between Amanda's death and the deaths of the six children. It has not said whether any of the children were awake or aware of what was happening. It has not confirmed whether Kristopher left any communication, a note, a message, a call, before or during the killings.

The Daily Mail has reached out to the Ottawa County Sheriff's Office for comment. No response has been reported.

What is known comes from death certificates and a handful of official statements. Eight people are dead. Seven of them, a mother and her six children, the youngest just five years old, were killed by the one person in the world most responsible for keeping them safe. The investigation continues, but no finding will undo what happened inside that house in Grand Haven Township.
