Father, son stumble on WWII-era weapons during forest metal hunt

 November 24, 2025

What started as a casual metal detecting outing for a father and son turned into a significant find that demanded expert intervention.

According to Fox News, a 48-year-old man and his underage son, while exploring with a metal detector on Oct. 28 in the Orlické Mountains near Bartošovice, uncovered a buried object resembling ammunition, leading to a major operation by Czech authorities.

The father promptly notified officials after unearthing the suspicious item at a depth of about 30 centimeters. His quick thinking set off a chain of events that would reveal a hidden piece of the past.

Uncovering a Dangerous Relic of War

Police were dispatched to secure the forested area, just under 1,000 feet from the border crossing. An initial investigation confirmed the gravity of the find, necessitating specialized help.

A bomb disposal expert was called in to handle the situation with precision. Over two days, the team unearthed an astonishing haul of wartime munitions.

The cache included 138 shells of 105 mm caliber, 14 of 75 mm, and 5 cartridge cases. Authorities believe these artifacts trace back to World War II, a silent testament to the region’s turbulent history.

Safe Removal and Public Gratitude

The munitions were carefully transported to a secure storage facility in Ralsko, once a military airport site. This ensured no risk to the public or the surrounding environment.

Czech police praised the father’s responsible actions, noting his vigilance allowed for a safe intervention. “The police thank citizens who act responsibly in such situations, as their vigilance and prompt reporting allow experts to intervene safely, minimize risk and protect lives and property,” the release stated.

That commendation isn’t just polite lip service; it’s a reminder that individual caution can prevent disaster. When history’s deadly leftovers are involved, there’s no room for reckless curiosity.

Authorities Issue a Stern Warning

Following the discovery, officials issued clear guidance to the public on handling similar finds. “Do not handle the object,” they urged, emphasizing the danger of tampering with potential explosives.

They further advised against digging up or moving such items, stressing the need to maintain a safe distance. Waiting for trained professionals to arrive is the only sensible course of action.

The Orlické Mountains, straddling the Czech Republic and Poland, have yielded multiple archaeological treasures this year alone. This region seems to guard its secrets well, only revealing them to those who tread lightly but alertly.

History’s Echoes and Modern Lessons

This incident isn’t an isolated one; earlier this spring, hikers in the same country found a hefty stash of gold treasures. Across the border in Poland, friends hunting for WWII relics also struck an ancient jackpot.

These discoveries, while fascinating, carry a weight of responsibility that can’t be ignored. They remind us that the past isn’t just a story in a book; it’s often buried just beneath our feet, waiting with both wonder and warning.

Let’s hope more citizens heed the call to caution as they explore, preserving history without risking lives. After all, unearthing the past should enlighten us, not endanger us, and it starts with respecting the rules of safety over the thrill of the find.
