Matthew Goicochea, a decorated New York City firefighter remembered for saving a disabled woman from a burning building, was killed early Thursday morning in a hit-and-run crash on the FDR Drive.
According to the New York Post, Goicochea, 31, lost control of his motorcycle on a Manhattan highway before being fatally struck by another vehicle that fled the scene.
The incident occurred while Goicochea was heading north on the FDR Drive near East 25th Street. He was operating a 2023 Yamaha motorcycle when he lost control and fell onto the road surface. As he lay on the pavement, he was struck by a passing vehicle whose driver did not stop. Emergency responders transported Goicochea to Bellevue Hospital, where he was pronounced dead due to injuries sustained in the collision. Authorities have not yet identified the driver involved in the crash.
In a statement released following the tragedy, the New York City Fire Department expressed deep sorrow. “The FDNY mourns the loss of Firefighter Matthew Goicochea, who tragically passed away early Thursday morning,” the department said. Investigators are continuing to search for the individual responsible.
Award-Winning Rescue Remembered After Tragedy
Goicochea joined the Fire Department of New York in September 2022 and quickly distinguished himself with a display of courage that earned him official recognition the following year. During an early morning fire in the Bronx, he executed an act of extraordinary bravery that resonated throughout the city. The rescue, which occurred on August 14, 2023, involved an unconscious woman trapped in a rear bedroom of a burning residence in the Morris Park neighborhood. Smoke had severely hindered visibility throughout the home. Goicochea crawled into the structure and discovered the woman entangled in her wheelchair.
Conditions were rapidly deteriorating, with heat and flames intensifying, and no water line yet available to suppress the fire. According to the FDNY’s 2024 Medal Day report, Goicochea responded quickly, shielding the woman with his body as he made his way out of danger. He managed to carry the victim to safety without injury to either of them, despite facing significant personal risk.
Firefighter Honored With Distinguished Medal
In recognition of that act, Goicochea was awarded the Thomas Wylie Medal in 2024. Named for a former firefighter whose legacy represents valor and service, the medal honors those who display exemplary bravery during emergency responses. In describing the events of that night, the FDNY praised his fast decision-making and physical protection of the woman. “With conditions in the fire apartment rapidly worsening and no hoseline yet in place, FF Goicochea made his move past the now-extending fire while shielding the victim with his body.”
The department noted that such actions “led to the rescue” despite placing him “at great personal risk." Officials emphasized that his ability to remain calm and act decisively under pressure was critical to the rescue’s success and ultimately saved a life.
Department Pays Tribute to Fallen Firefighter
Goicochea’s death has left the firefighting community in mourning. Fellow firefighters remembered him as courageous and committed to protecting others—even in situations lacking crucial fire suppression equipment. His passing marks a significant loss to the ranks of those who run toward danger rather than away from it. At just 31 years old, Goicochea had already built a reputation for selflessness and determination. His work in the time since joining the department was described as reflecting the core values of the FDNY.
Though only in service for about three years, the impact Goicochea made was described by colleagues as “remarkable” given the short period. His rescue in the Bronx stands out as one of the more daring feats by any firefighter in recent years.
Authorities Seek Help Locating Hit-And-Run Driver
As investigations continue into Thursday’s crash, police are appealing to the public for assistance in identifying the hit-and-run driver who fled the scene after striking Goicochea. Surveillance footage from surrounding areas and eyewitness reports are currently being reviewed.
Officials have not disclosed any further information about the vehicle or its driver. Goicochea's family has not made a public statement, but numerous tributes have appeared online from fellow firefighters and community members. The FDNY urged anyone with information about the incident to come forward, emphasizing the importance of accountability and justice in this case.
Community Grieves Loss of a Public Servant
Across New York City, residents and first responders alike have shared condolences, remembering Goicochea not only for his bravery but for his compassion. Social media messages recalled his actions as inspirational and his character as humble.
Plans for a memorial or public service have not been announced yet. However, those who worked with him suggest a lasting tribute may be discussed in the coming weeks to honor his dedication to public service. While the investigation continues, the legacy of Matthew Goicochea stands as a reminder of the risks firefighters face daily—and of the courage it takes to do the job.
