Foreign fighters among the dead in deadly Russian strike on Ukrainian base

 August 13, 2025

A devastating missile attack on a Ukrainian military training facility has claimed the lives of international volunteers from multiple countries.

According to The Moscow Times, at least a dozen foreign volunteers serving in Ukraine's military were killed in a Russian missile strike on a training camp in central Ukraine on July 21. The report, citing Ukrainian soldiers familiar with the incident, was published by The New York Times on Tuesday.

The victims included citizens from the United States, Colombia, Taiwan, Denmark, and other countries who were part of the International Legion of Ukraine's military intelligence. The strike occurred near the city of Kropyvnytskyi during what should have been a routine training period for international recruits.

Deadly Strike During Lunch Hour

The missile struck the base's dining hall during lunchtime when soldiers were gathered inside for their meal. An anonymous American recruit from Florida described the blast as the loudest he had ever heard in his life.

The Florida recruit witnessed at least 15 dead and more than 100 wounded in the immediate aftermath of the strike. According to his account, the base's air raid siren failed to sound before the attack, and there were no first-aid kits available in the dining hall where the missile hit.

The initial strike triggered a fire at a nearby ammunition depot, causing additional explosions that complicated rescue operations. Survivors attempting to help the wounded faced continued danger as secondary blasts erupted around the facility.

Official Response and Investigation

Ukrainian military officials confirmed that soldiers were killed and wounded in the attack but declined to provide specific details. Volodymyr Kaminsky, a spokesman for the International Legion of Ukraine's military intelligence, stated that an investigation was underway.

Kaminsky explained that official casualty figures could not be released until the investigation was completed. Ukraine's Air Force had previously confirmed a missile attack on Kropyvnytskyi on the day of the strike, with regional administration officials dispatching emergency services to the scene.

The ammunition depot fire created a cascade of explosions that continued even as emergency responders and fellow soldiers tried to tend to casualties. This secondary damage significantly hampered immediate medical assistance and evacuation efforts for the wounded.

Pattern of Attacks on Training Facilities

This incident represents part of a concerning pattern of Russian attacks on Ukrainian military training centers. In 2022, troops were killed in an attack on a training center in Yavoriv, demonstrating Russia's strategy of targeting military preparation sites.

More recently, in 2024, a missile strike in Poltava resulted in the deaths of more than 50 cadets and soldiers.

These attacks highlight the vulnerability of training facilities and the ongoing threat to both Ukrainian and international personnel.

Enhanced Security Measures Moving Forward

Ukraine's commander-in-chief Oleksandr Syrskyi responded by emphasizing that troops "must respond to air raid alerts and enemy drones immediately." He also announced plans to move training operations to sheltered underground sites "as much as possible" to better protect personnel from future attacks.

The lack of proper warning systems at the Kropyvnytskyi facility has raised serious questions about security protocols at training centers. Military leadership is now reviewing safety measures and emergency preparedness procedures across all training installations.

These changes come as international volunteers continue to join Ukraine's military efforts despite the clear dangers highlighted by this tragic incident. The military must balance the need for effective training with the imperative to protect recruits from Russian missile attacks.
