A soldier stationed at Fort Bliss has been charged with espionage after allegedly attempting to transmit sensitive military information to the Russian government.
According to Military Times, Spc. Taylor Adam Lee, 22, was arrested Wednesday in El Paso, Texas, on charges of attempted transmission of national defense information to a foreign adversary and attempted export of controlled technical data without a license.
Lee, who holds a Top Secret/Sensitive Compartmented Information security clearance, allegedly sought to establish his credentials with Russia's Ministry of Defense and share classified information from May 2025 until his arrest this week. His actions included transmitting export-controlled technical data on the M1A2 Abrams tank online and offering assistance to the Russian Federation.
Soldier Explicitly Offered Help To Russian Government
In June, Lee allegedly made his intentions clear when communicating online about the M1A2 Abrams tank. During these communications, he stated that "the USA is not happy with me for trying to expose their weaknesses" and indicated his willingness to "volunteer to assist the Russian Federation when I'm there in any way."
The investigation culminated in July when Lee met with someone he believed to be a Russian government representative. During this meeting, he allegedly passed an SD card containing sensitive information to the individual, including documents about the M1A2 Abrams tank and another armored fighting vehicle used by U.S. military forces.
Several documents Lee shared contained controlled technical data that he lacked authorization to provide. Other materials were marked as Controlled Unclassified Information with banner warnings and dissemination controls, indicating their sensitive nature.
Tank Hardware Delivered In Espionage Scheme
Throughout the July meeting and subsequent communications, Lee discussed obtaining and providing specific hardware from inside the M1A2 Abrams tank to the Russian government. This plan moved forward on July 31 when he delivered what appeared to be the hardware to a storage unit in El Paso.
After completing this task, Lee messaged the person he believed represented the Russian government, simply stating, "Mission accomplished." This action marked a significant escalation in his alleged espionage activities, moving from sharing documents to providing physical military components.
The case highlights ongoing counterintelligence concerns within the military, particularly regarding service members with access to sensitive information. Lee's Top Secret clearance gave him access to classified material that could potentially compromise U.S. national security if shared with adversaries.

Army leadership similarly expressed alarm over the incident. Brigadier General Sean F. Stinchon, commanding general of Army Counterintelligence Command, called the arrest "an alarming reminder of the serious threat facing our U.S. Army" while praising the collaboration between Army Counterintelligence Command Special Agents and the FBI.
Stinchon emphasized that soldiers who violate their oath and become insider threats "will absolutely be caught and brought to justice," reaffirming the military's commitment to protecting personnel and safeguarding equipment.
