Harris Agrees to CNN Debate, Trump Declines Over Timing Concerns

 September 23, 2024

The dynamics of the upcoming presidential race shifted notably as Vice President Kamala Harris accepted an invitation from CNN for a debate, while former President Donald Trump declined the chance to participate.

According to the Washington Post, Vice President Kamala Harris has agreed to join a CNN-hosted presidential debate on October 23, challenging her counterpart, Donald Trump, to meet her on the debate platform.

The planned debate, scheduled to be held in CNN’s Atlanta studios without a live audience, has been marked by controversy due to Trump’s refusal. His main grievance is the timing of the event, as early voting procedures would have already commenced.

Trump's Stance and Harris’s Campaign Strategy

Jen O’Malley Dillon, Harris's campaign manager, emphasized that the debate would adhere to the same conditions as one Trump participated in and praised earlier in the year.

This strategic move by the Harris campaign seeks to draw Trump back into the debating arena, leveraging his previous acceptance and positive comments about the debate’s format and moderation.

“Donald Trump should have no problem agreeing to this debate. It is the same format and setup as the CNN debate he attended and said he won in June when he praised CNN’s moderators, rules, and ratings,” O'Malley Dillon highlighted to the press.

Earlier debates have usually proven pivotal, exemplified by Harris’s outshining Trump during their last confrontation on September 10. Subsequent polls favored Harris, suggesting Trump's reluctance might also be influenced by past performances.

CNN's Proposed Debate Format and Campaign Responses

CNN has proposed that the October 23 debate follow the format of the June 27 faceoff between President Joe Biden and Trump. The debate would take place at the company's Atlanta studios without a live audience.

O'Malley Dillon emphasized the importance of debates in the electoral process, stating:

It would be unprecedented in modern history for there to just be one general election debate. Debates offer a unique chance for voters to see the candidates side by side and take stock of their competing visions for America.

Harris's campaign has agreed to accept muted microphones and other restrictions during the proposed CNN debate. This decision comes after the campaign initially sought to change the rules that had been requested by Biden's allies before he ended his presidential bid.

Trump flatly stated his decision on the matter on social media as well, using stronger wording to express his final stance, “THERE WILL BE NO THIRD DEBATE!”

Conclusion

The debate saga between Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump continues to unfold with strategic maneuvers by both camps. Harris has openly accepted CNN's invitation for a debate on October 23, urging Trump to participate.

Trump, on the other hand, cites the inappropriateness of the timing, with early voting already in motion, as his reason for declining. While the Harris campaign aims to capitalize on this televised opportunity to appeal to voters, Trump remains steadfast in his decision to forgo it, marking a significant juncture in what continues to be a fiercely contested presidential race.
