Harris Campaign Updates Military Details On Walz After Criticism

 August 9, 2024

Kamala Harris’s presidential campaign recently clarified the military record of her chosen running mate, Tim Walz.

According to the Independent, the change on the official campaign site adjusted Tim Walz’s military accolades following scrutiny from political adversaries.

The controversy centered around Walz’s title upon leaving the military. Initial campaign materials described him as a "retired command sergeant major." This term was later altered to "rose to the rank of Command Sergeant Major" to reflect his service record more accurately.

Tim Walz, who began his service in the National Guard at 17, had a distinguished 24-year career, albeit not retiring at the highest rank he once held.

Vigorous Debate Over Military Credentials

Republican JD Vance sharply criticized Walz's military characterization. At a rally, Vance contrasted his service with Walz’s, pointing out his decision to exit the military ahead of his unit’s deployment to Iraq.

According to Lt. Col. Kristen Augé, the public affairs officer for the Minnesota Guard, Walz held the position of command sergeant major but retired as a master sergeant to align with benefit requirements, as he had not completed the necessary coursework.

This military nuance underlies the ongoing political jabs between Vance and Walz, who has dismissed Vance’s critiques as baseless.

Walz's Varied Career Before Politics

Before his entrance into politics, Tim Walz was engaged in education and sports, working as a high school geography teacher and a football coach. These roles in his community preceded his more public political achievements.

He successfully ran for the U.S. House of Representatives in 2006, and later, he took office as the Governor of Minnesota in 2018, securing re-election in 2022. These roles have showcased a track record of public service both in and out of uniform.

The Republican allegations of "stolen valor" escalated the scrutiny of the webpage descriptions. The campaign’s swift response to revise Walz's military title highlighted a sensitive consideration of his service and the respect for military titles within the broader veteran community.

The issue of how political figures represent their military service possesses significant implications. In the case of Tim Walz, the tensions surrounding his campaign description bring to light the complexities of military rankings and public perceptions.

Having adjusted their campaign materials, the Harris team likely aims to foster transparency and prevent any further misinterpretations of Walz’s commendable military career.

Conclusion

Kamala Harris's campaign updated Tim Walz’s military record to correct his title from "retired command sergeant major" to "rose to the rank of Command Sergeant Major." The adjustment followed criticism, and Walz's military service became a point of debate, especially with JD Vance. Walz, who retired as a master sergeant, had a varied career before politics, including teaching and coaching.

  1. Tim Walz’s should be in jail for breaking The Stolen Valor Act, since he continues to state in his speeches that he carried weapons in war and he did not... But of course nothing will happen to him because he is a democrat.
