A Christmas Eve tragedy unfolded in Sherman, Texas, when Will Robinson, a high school basketball coach, lost his life after floodwaters swept away his family’s SUV. The search continues for his missing 8-year-old daughter.
According to Fox News, Robinson’s family was traveling in their SUV when heavy rains caused the vehicle to veer into a drainage ditch and be carried away by strong currents.
Six members of the family were inside the SUV during the incident. Four were rescued, but Robinson did not survive, and his young daughter remains unaccounted for. Rescue efforts involving local and state emergency teams have been underway since the accident.
Emergency Teams Search Extensive Creek Stretch
The Sherman Police Department, with the assistance of state teams like Texas Task Force 2, has identified a 15-mile creek area downstream from where the vehicle came to rest. Teams have already combed through seven miles of the creek. Search operations include canine units and watercraft teams, and officials strategically pause searches at night for safety.
Lieutenant Samuel Boyle, speaking about the accident, attributed the tragedy to “a combination of a heavy downpour and accumulation of groundwater.” He added that the current swept the vehicle away once it entered the drainage ditch.
Governor Greg Abbott has approved additional state resources to bolster the search. Despite this, authorities have emphasized that no additional volunteers are needed at this time to avoid overcrowding and maintain operational efficiency.
Devastation Felt By Family And Community
The incident has left Robinson’s family and community in mourning. Robinson’s cousin expressed heartbreak over the tragedy in a social media post, calling it “devastating” and describing Robinson as a devoted father and beloved coach.
Robinson was a respected figure in Durant, Oklahoma, where he coached high school basketball. His passing has deeply affected those who knew him.
Police Issue Warnings About Flood Risks
Officials have taken the opportunity to warn the public about the dangers of driving through standing water. Boyle emphasized the unpredictability of such conditions, urging drivers to avoid flooded areas entirely and seek alternate routes when necessary. “Once you have lost control…you are at the mercy of the water,” he said, highlighting the risk posed by fast-moving floodwaters.
The police department has encouraged anyone with additional information about the incident or the missing child to contact them.
They continue to coordinate efforts with local agencies, emphasizing their commitment to finding the child and bringing closure to the grieving family.
Searches To Resume At Daybreak
Search efforts are planned to continue at first light, with rescue teams covering new areas along the creek. The multi-agency task force remains focused on the downstream area, where officials believe there is the greatest chance of locating the missing girl.
As the search enters its fourth day, the Robinson family continues to wait for answers. Meanwhile, the broader community has rallied in support, offering prayers and condolences to the grieving family.
This tragedy serves as a somber reminder of the power of nature and the importance of taking precautions during severe weather conditions.
