Israel confirms killing top Iranian general in Tehran strike

 June 18, 2025

Israeli forces have escalated tensions with Iran by killing yet another top military commander. The sudden strike has sent shockwaves through the region as conflict between the two nations intensifies.

According to Fox News, Israel announced Tuesday it had eliminated Major General Ali Shadmani, Iran's wartime chief of staff, in a precision strike at the regime's headquarters in central Tehran. IDF Spokesperson Brigadier General Effie Defrin confirmed the high-profile killing in an official statement.

This marks the second elimination of Iran's wartime chief in less than a week, as Shadmani had only held the position for approximately four days. He took over after his predecessor, Major General Gholam Ali Rashid, was killed during Israel's initial strikes on Iran on June 13.

Israeli Forces Assert Aerial Dominance Over Tehran

Israel's military has made bold claims regarding its operational capabilities inside Iranian territory. The elimination of such a high-ranking official demonstrates Israel's reach into the heart of the Iranian capital.

In a statement following the operation, Brigadier General Defrin vowed that Israel would "relentlessly pursue" its enemies through advanced intelligence capabilities, exploiting emerging opportunities, air superiority, and complex operational planning. This language suggests Israel possesses significant intelligence networks and military capabilities within Iran's borders.

NBC News reported that Israel took out the commander "in the heart of Tehran," seizing a "sudden opportunity." This indicates the strike may have been opportunistic rather than long-planned, showcasing Israel's intelligence gathering and rapid response capabilities.

Iran's Leadership Succession Under Pressure

Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei had only recently announced Shadmani's appointment following the death of his predecessor. The rapid elimination of consecutive military leaders creates significant pressure on Iran's command structure.

Khamenei used his English-language X account to announce Shadmani's appointment after Rashid's death, writing: "In view of Lt. Gen. Gholamali Rashid's martyrdom at the hands of the vile Zionist regime, and in light of Major General Ali Shadmani's meritorious service and valuable experience, I confer the rank of Major Gen. & appoint him Commander of the Khatam al-Anbiya (pbuh) Central HQ."

Shadmani led the Khatam al-Anbiya Central Headquarters, also referred to as Iran's military emergency command. In this role, he allegedly managed combat operations and approved Iran's attack plans, according to the Times of Israel.

Operation Rising Lion Targets Key Iranian Figures

Since launching Operation Rising Lion, Israel has systematically targeted and eliminated several high-ranking officials in Iran's military and nuclear programs. These strikes appear strategically focused on disrupting Iran's command structure.

The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) announced the killing on social media platform X, stating: "For the second time in 5 days, the IDF has eliminated Iran's Wartime Chief of Staff, the regime's top military commander. Ali Shadmani, Iran's senior-most military official and Khamenei's closest military advisor, was killed in an IAF strike in central Tehran, following precise intelligence."

Photos released following Israel's strikes on June 13 showed massive plumes of smoke and fire rising from an oil refinery in southern Tehran. These images illustrated the scale and impact of Israel's military campaign inside Iranian territory.

Escalating Conflict Raises Regional Concerns

The targeted killing of Iran's most senior military leader represents a significant escalation in the ongoing conflict between Israel and Iran. Shadmani's position made him one of the most powerful figures in the Iranian military establishment.

As wartime chief of staff, Shadmani stood as Iran's senior-most military official and reportedly served as Supreme Leader Khamenei's closest military advisor. His elimination leaves a substantial void in Iran's military leadership at a critical moment of regional tension.

The strike occurred within central Tehran, demonstrating Israel's willingness and ability to conduct operations deep within Iranian territory. This bold move follows Israel's initial attacks on June 13, which marked the beginning of Operation Rising Lion.
