A bloody Sunday morning in Brooklyn's Bensonhurst neighborhood turned chaotic when police responded to a disturbing 911 call from a young girl.
According to Yahoo News, a 49-year-old man wielding a blood-covered meat cleaver was shot by New York City police officers after allegedly stabbing four young girls, believed to be his relatives, inside their home.
The incident began around 10:15 a.m. when an 11-year-old girl managed to hide in a bedroom and call emergency services while the attack was ongoing. Police and emergency medical services arrived within minutes after using technology to trace the phone call and determine the exact location of the assault.
Quick Police Response Prevents Further Tragedy
NYPD Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch described the scene officers encountered as "horrific," with blood spattering the walls and floors of the apartment. A young boy related to the family helped police enter the building by running to a neighbor's apartment for assistance.
Officers heard screams coming from an apartment and immediately kicked down the door. Inside, they found the suspect holding a large bloody meat cleaver near the entrance, with visible blood throughout the home.
The situation escalated when the man refused multiple commands to drop his weapon and instead moved toward the officers. Two officers fired seven rounds combined, striking and critically wounding the suspect.
Young Victims Fight for Recovery
The four victims, all sisters aged 8, 11, 13, and 16, sustained serious slash and stab wounds during the attack. Emergency services transported them to Maimonides Medical Center in Brooklyn for treatment.
Medical staff at Maimonides are working to treat the girls' injuries. Despite the severity of their wounds, all four sisters are expected to survive the ordeal.
The suspect, who was also taken to Maimonides Medical Center, remains in critical condition following the police shooting.
Investigation Reveals Disturbing Details
NYPD Chief of Department John Chell noted that investigators are working to confirm the exact relationship between the suspect and the victims. The children's mother was not present during the attack.
Police Commissioner Tisch stated that officers recovered two blood-covered weapons from the scene - the meat cleaver and a kitchen knife. The entire police shooting was captured on officers' body-worn cameras.
Family members informed investigators that the suspect, who lived in the home, had a history of mental illness. However, NYPD records show no previous calls for service to the address.
Case Continues to Unfold
The brutal attack on four young sisters in their Brooklyn home has left the Bensonhurst community shaken. Police are still investigating the motive behind the violent assault that resulted in serious injuries to the children and the shooting of their alleged attacker.
Officers' quick response and decisive action likely prevented an even worse outcome. The suspect remains under police watch at Maimonides Medical Center while the four young victims recover from their injuries at the same facility.
