McConnell Expresses Support For Trump's Prosecution Over Jan. 6

 October 22, 2024

A forthcoming biography reveals unexpected comments from a key Republican figure, shaking up the political landscape.

According to Axios, Senate GOP leader Mitch McConnell has expressed support for special counsel Jack Smith and hopes former President Donald Trump will face consequences for his role in the January 6th events.

McConnell's statements, made to journalist Michael Tackett for the book "The Price of Power," shed light on the senator's views regarding the federal charges against Trump. The longest-serving Republican leader's comments carry significant weight, especially given his history of criticizing the former president.

McConnell's Surprising Endorsement of Charges

In the weeks following Smith's charges against Trump in August 2023, McConnell made a stark statement to Tackett. He said, "If he hasn't committed indictable offenses, I don't know what one is."

This bold declaration underscores McConnell's belief in the merit of the federal prosecutors' case against Trump. The senator further emphasized his hope that Trump would "pay a price" for his actions related to January 6th.

Tackett's book also reveals that McConnell seriously considered voting to convict Trump during the 2021 impeachment trial. This consideration was significant, as a conviction could have potentially barred Trump from running for office again.

Impeachment Deliberations and Outcome

In an oral history interview conducted a week after the insurrection, McConnell expressed his thoughts on Trump's actions. He stated:

I'm not at all conflicted about whether what the president did is an impeachable offense. I think it is.

The senator went on to describe the urging of an insurrection and the attack on the Capitol as "about as close to an impeachable offense as you can imagine."

Despite these strong words, McConnell ultimately voted to acquit Trump. He justified his decision by arguing that Trump was no longer in office and, therefore, not eligible for conviction. Following the vote, McConnell emphasized that former presidents are not immune from accountability through the criminal justice system or civil litigation.

Political Maneuvering and Media Influence

The biography also sheds light on McConnell's behind-the-scenes efforts to address concerns about Trump. In 2022, he sought a secret meeting with Fox founder Rupert Murdoch and his son Lachlan, enlisting former House Speaker Paul Ryan to arrange the encounter.

McConnell shared his perspective on the Murdochs' relationship with Trump, stating, "I don't think Murdoch has been in love with Trump for a long time." This insight provides a glimpse into the complex dynamics between political leaders and media influencers.

Despite his critical stance, McConnell endorsed Trump for president in March 2024. When questioned about his previous statements, McConnell responded:

Whatever I may have said about President Trump pales in comparison to what JD Vance, Lindsey Graham, and others have said about him, but we are all on the same team now.

The Irony of McConnell's Legacy

The ongoing legal battles surrounding Trump present an intriguing paradox in relation to McConnell's career achievements. If Trump manages to evade federal consequences, it may be partly due to one of McConnell's proudest accomplishments – confirming a conservative majority on the U.S. Supreme Court.

In July, the court ruled that presidents have some immunity from prosecution for "official actions." This decision could potentially impact the case brought by special counsel Jack Smith, which is still ongoing.

McConnell's revelations in this upcoming biography highlight the complex and often contradictory nature of political relationships and decision-making. His support for the charges against Trump, coupled with his eventual endorsement, illustrates the delicate balance political figures must maintain in today's polarized environment.

  1. hmmm McConnell has been nothing but a democrat in disguise since he ran for political office. When he speaks it's like listening to AOC talk about improving the economy, while her borough burns around her... In other words clueless to what's happening in their surroundings...
