Migrants found hidden in hay during Texas smuggling arrest

 May 22, 2025

A shocking human smuggling scheme was discovered Tuesday when a traffic stop revealed a dozen migrants hidden inside hollowed-out hay bales stacked on a trailer in Texas.

According to Breitbart, a white Ford F-250 pickup truck carrying a trailer loaded with large round hay bales was intercepted, leading to the discovery of 12 migrants hidden inside hollowed-out bales in a dangerous smuggling attempt.

Sheriff Korenek revealed that the smugglers had carved out and modified the hay bales using metal frameworks and layers of hay to conceal the people inside. The method, while inventive, put the lives of those hidden at significant risk. The traffic stop occurred near mile marker 658, almost 250 miles from the Texas-Mexico border, underscoring how far such smuggling operations can reach into the interior of the United States.

Smuggling Operation Uncovered on Texas Highway

Fayette County authorities reported that the traffic stop took place just after noon on Tuesday, drawing in multiple agencies, including Texas DPS troopers and the Flatonia Police Department. Upon closer inspection, Sgt. Thumann discovered that the hay bales had been hollowed out and reinforced with metal to create secret compartments.

Inside these makeshift chambers, a dozen migrants were found, highlighting the extreme lengths smugglers are willing to go to evade law enforcement. Sheriff Korenek emphasized the life-threatening nature of such concealment tactics, as the migrants had minimal ventilation and no way to escape if something went wrong.

Officials identified the driver as 44-year-old Delbert Flanders from Kansas, who was hospitalized for undisclosed medical reasons following the stop. Two Houston residents, 22-year-old Adanaylo Lambert and 25-year-old Lency Delgado Fernandez, were arrested as coordinators of the smuggling attempt. Both now face state and federal charges related to human smuggling.

Critics Question Border Security and Human Rights

The incident has reignited debate over border security, with critics pointing to the sheer distance from the border as evidence that current enforcement strategies are not enough. Some argue that this case illustrates the resourcefulness of smugglers and the dangers faced by migrants who place their trust in criminal networks.

Civil rights advocates have raised concerns about the conditions faced by the migrants, stressing that human smuggling is often driven by desperation. They argue that punitive measures alone do not address the root causes of migration or safeguard the rights and well-being of vulnerable individuals.

At the same time, law enforcement officials and supporters maintain that aggressive interdiction is necessary to disrupt organized smuggling operations. Sheriff Korenek made clear the department’s commitment to pursuing both smugglers and their coordinators, not just those caught at the borders but also those operating deep within Texas.

Sheriff’s Team and K-9 Unit Praised for Their Efforts

Sgt. Randy Thumann, who conducted the traffic stop, is no stranger to dangerous interdictions. Breitbart Texas has documented his exploits since 2016, noting his long history of major drug and currency seizures as well as previous human smuggling cases. His work, frequently supported by K-9 partners and fellow deputies, has drawn praise from both local officials and national observers.

The successful operation on Tuesday was a team effort, with the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office, Texas DPS troopers, and local EMS all playing crucial roles. The quick action of these agencies ensured that the migrants were removed from immediate danger and that the suspected smugglers were taken into custody.

Sheriff Korenek commented on the evolving tactics of human smugglers, warning that they have become “increasingly creative and hazardous.” He said, “This method of concealment is not only deceptive but incredibly dangerous to human life. Smugglers continue to use increasingly creative and hazardous techniques to transport individuals across Texas highways.”

Migrants Handed Over to ICE

After their rescue, the 12 migrants were turned over to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) for processing and removal. The fate of the migrants now rests with federal authorities, as local law enforcement focuses on prosecuting those accused of orchestrating the smuggling attempt.

Delbert Flanders, hospitalized after the incident, faces multiple charges, while Lambert and Delgado Fernandez are expected to stand trial on state and federal counts. The legal process will likely bring renewed attention to the challenges of combating organized human smuggling in Texas and beyond.

Meanwhile, the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office and its partners remain vigilant. Sheriff Korenek has pledged continued cooperation with state and federal agencies as the investigation into this case and related smuggling operations continues.
