NFL draft prospect Kyren Lacy ends life at 24 following negligent homicide case

 April 14, 2025

A tragic turn of events unfolds as former LSU wide receiver Kyren Lacy faces personal struggles amid legal challenges stemming from a fatal December car crash.

According to Daily Mail Online, the 24-year-old NFL draft prospect took his own life on Saturday night in Houston, just weeks before his scheduled court appearance for negligent homicide charges.

The incident occurred months after Lacy's involvement in a December 17 car crash that resulted in the death of a 78-year-old Louisiana man. Local authorities alleged that Lacy's reckless driving, including speeding and illegal passing maneuvers in his Dodge Charger, caused another motorist to swerve and collide head-on with another vehicle.

Legal battle and career aspirations clash

Despite facing serious criminal charges, Lacy maintained his innocence through his attorney Matthew Ory. The legal team disputed police accounts of the incident, asserting that Lacy's actions did not directly cause the fatal collision.

Ory's client faced multiple charges, including negligent homicide, hit-and-run driving with serious injury or death, and reckless operation with accident. After posting a $151,000 bond, Lacy remained active in pursuing his NFL dreams.

Just 18 days before his death, Lacy participated in LSU's pro day, showcasing his abilities before NFL scouts. The wide receiver's performance in 2024 marked his career-best season, with 58 catches for 866 yards and nine touchdowns in 12 games.

Friend's emotional tribute reveals final struggles

Lacy's close friend Rontrell Sandolph shared a heartbreaking message on social media, offering insight into the player's state of mind before his death:

I'm so lost for words... I went to sleep 4 times and woke up to see if that was a dream. All the talks, all the tears, everything, you know GOD had us! The dreams we had started to kick in, you making it to NFL & me playing ball Overseas!!! Our dreams was coming to reality… We talked and cried and laughed it off everyday bro!!! I can't fing do this s without you... watch over me & don't let me quit for nothing!!!

The LSU football program acknowledged the loss on social media, expressing their grief over Lacy's passing. His three-year career with the Tigers resulted in impressive statistics, including 112 catches, 1,692 yards, and 16 touchdowns.

Controversy surrounds NFL draft declaration

The timing of Lacy's NFL draft declaration sparked criticism, as it came just two days after the fatal crash. His attorney defended this decision, stating that Lacy did not believe he was responsible for the accident.

Through his legal representation, Lacy maintained that his actions following the incident, including sharing graduation pictures and continuing training, were not meant to diminish the tragedy. His attorney emphasized Lacy's exemplary character and community involvement throughout his career.

The case garnered additional attention when conflicting accounts emerged between law enforcement and Lacy's legal team regarding the details of the crash and his subsequent actions at the scene.

A promising future cut short

The young athlete's death marks a devastating end to what could have been a promising NFL career. Lacy's final social media post in February simply stated "Trust the process!!" as he navigated both legal challenges and professional aspirations.

The 24-year-old wide receiver's passing leaves behind a complex legacy, intertwining athletic achievement with personal struggles. His death occurred while awaiting trial for charges related to the December car crash, bringing a premature close to both legal proceedings and NFL dreams.
