Passenger Files Lawsuit Against United for Forced Removal from Airplane Bathroom

A federal lawsuit was filed against United Airlines and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security following a distressing incident involving an Orthodox Jewish passenger during a flight from Tulum to Houston.

According to the Daily Journal, Yisroel Liebb claims he was forcibly removed from an airplane bathroom and subsequently detained, which has led to legal action.

The episode began when Yisroel Liebb, from New Jersey, experienced severe gastrointestinal distress during the flight. Liebb had been in the bathroom for approximately 20 minutes when a flight attendant approached his traveling companion, Jacob Sebbag, to check on him.

Despite Sebbag confirming that Liebb was unwell but okay, the situation escalated about 10 minutes later. The pilot confronted Liebb, yelling and eventually breaking into the bathroom. This intrusion not only led to Liebb being exposed in front of other passengers but also involved the pilot making disparaging remarks about the faith of Liebb and his companion.

Detention and Treatment at Houston Airport

Upon landing in Houston, the situation for Liebb and Sebbag worsened. They were taken into custody by U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers.

The officers paraded them through the airport, detained them in holding cells, and scrutinized their luggage. Liebb recounted an interaction where he asked an officer why they were being detained, to which he was told, "This isn’t county or state. We are Homeland. You have no rights here."

According to an official statement from Hilton Beckham, CBP Assistant Commissioner for Public Affairs, "CBP Officers responded to reports of a disturbance on a flight at the request of the airline. Due to the ongoing litigation, we are unable to provide any further comment."

Legal Actions and Response from United Airlines

The lawsuit was filed by Liebb in Manhattan federal court on a Wednesday, citing offenses by the airline and federal officers involved.

Following the incident and the detention, United Airlines arranged a next-day flight to New York City for Liebb and Sebbag. However, they required them to bear the cost of their accommodations and meals during the unforeseen delay.

The case highlights significant concerns regarding airline staff conduct, passenger rights, and the treatment of individuals detained under federal authority at airports. This incident has garnered attention regarding the behaviors of airline staff towards passengers under special circumstances and the protocols followed by law enforcement in handling such matters at airports.
