Pete Hegseth Open to Military Options Against Mexican Cartels

 February 1, 2025

Newly appointed Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth has not ruled out the possibility of U.S. military intervention in Mexico as part of a broader strategy to combat cartel violence and threats along the southern border.

According to the Independent, this bold stance is a response to the elevated threats from cartels, recently designated as foreign terrorist organizations.

On his inaugural day as Secretary of Defense, Hegseth supported President Donald Trump's comprehensive approach to national security, focusing intensely on the threat posed by Mexican cartels.

Following the president's executive order, these cartels are now recognized formally as foreign terrorist organizations, which marks a significant shift in U.S. policy toward Mexico.

The executive orders signed by President Trump not only label these criminal entities as terrorists but also claim that America's sovereignty is threatened by activities at the southern border, such as drug trafficking and human smuggling.

These developments allow the administration to implement stringent economic sanctions and impose travel bans, enhancing the government's capability to act decisively.

Expanding Military Focus to Ensure U.S. Homeland Security

Amid these new policies, Secretary Hegseth emphasized that the military's strategy would evolve to prioritize homeland security. "We're finally securing our border," Hegseth noted, "The military is orienting, shifting toward an understanding of homeland defense on our sovereign territorial border."

This shift represents a fundamental change from previous defense postures that often focused on international conflicts. Hegseth firmly announced, "That is something we will do and do robustly," underlining a renewed commitment to U.S. soil's security against foreign threats.

Presidential Decisions Pave the Way for Potential Military Responses

Discussing the potential for military involvement further south, Hegseth made it clear that while the decision ultimately lies with President Trump, "All options will be on the table if we're dealing with what are designated to be foreign terrorist organizations who are specifically targeting Americans on our border."

The new stance could lead to unprecedented military deployments if the situation escalates. Hegseth reiterated his support for the President's authority and decision-making process, ensuring alignment with the administration's broader national security objectives.

New Measures Respond to Alleged Threats at the Border

Another critical piece of the administration's strategy comes from another executive order declaring a national emergency at the U.S.-Mexico border. This order facilitates the deployment of the National Guard and other military personnel, escalating the U.S. presence in the area.

This decision aligns with President Trump's depiction of the border situation in his executive order, which states, "Our southern border is overrun by cartels, criminal gangs, known terrorists, human traffickers, smugglers, unvetted military-age males from foreign adversaries, and illicit narcotics that harm Americans."

The sweeping measures and military readiness underscore the administration's aggressive posture toward the challenges at the border, aiming to restore control and enforce U.S. law.

Hegseth's acknowledgment of all potential military actions as viable options reflects a proactive approach to a problem that has been a significant aspect of Trump's agenda since his election campaign.
